maybe i dont know the whole story...but, if thats the turbo he wants to use...thats the one he wants to use...
i wouldnt get it...but to each his own
If you were going to jump off a cliff would it be wrong to tell you you would die if you did it?
A TO4 is such a poor match for the GA16 that we should tell someone its a bad match if they were planning to run it and there goal was only to make 400 hp.
A GA cannot rev high enough to use a big turbo unless you spent lots and lots of money developing the valvetrain. There are no valvetrain parts for the GA on the market. Even if you got rods, valve float would limit the engine.
Then the rest of the bottom end is not that strong either. Its a fast slope downhill.
Now its hard to get a GA to reliably rev past 7200 rpm or so. Even a small S trim TO4 is not going to spool hard until 5000 or so rpm. It will be a dog below that. When you shift it will fall out of the powerband and off boost for the first half of the gear. With a low compresion 1.6 liter bottom end, its really going to be soggy. Sure it will make some boost below 3000 rpm but it won't be significant and the power won't hit until 5000.
Now you could spend thousands getting custom valve springs or be luckey and there will be some other spring like a Honda or something that will fit with machining of the valve pockets and with the right retainer but not to many shops are smart enough to figure out the right installed height, etc.
Then there are no cams ground to work well into the 8500 rpm range either. You cant just have a cam ground and have it come out well because its not really that simple. Thats why cams like web, jg and gude don't work so hot, they are not engineered.
That why its much better to use a turbo like a GT2871, GT3071, 50 trim TO4E/T31 .63 a/r exhaust housing. These turbos will spool hard at around 3000-4000 rpm and allow the car to stay in boost for the whole gear. All have the ablitly to make 400 whp, more than a small trim TO4.
A car with these turbos will be faster than the car with the bigger turbo for that reason.
These are not opinions, they are facts.
Now someone could do what they want but someone that did it right would be a lot faster.

There really isn't a story... the math and tests have shown the T28 as the best choice..When the makers of the turbos agree it's hard to argue the point.
I agree with you 100%, He could put a 747 engine on the roof for all I care..haha... Just as long as others know it's not the optimal setup for the GA..
A T28, GT28, GT28RS won't make his goal hp of 400, it needs a bigger turbo to do that.
But if you get a TO4, then you can cut and paste different dyno charts to get the power and torque you want as well.

400 goal in a GA,,, yeah my goal was to be QB of the Dallas Cowboys or President of the US, but some dreams you have to give up on and face reality aint gonna happen
Damn all that work and all we really had to do is cut and paste .....
just out of curiosity, do u plan to get the SK lip as a cosmetic mod, i kno that you need a 95-97 bumper, but i think its worth it.
it would look absolutely beautiful, black and c/f
No as I have a GTR front bumper that I use for track days for better IC exposure. Other than that it is the low key 98 front bumper. The SK front lip is a very nice piece though!
Do you have any pics of your crown brake lines I would like to see how yours hang. Thanks.
I will take a pic. later today and post it so that you can check it out. They took a bit of adjusting but they fit OK and do not rub or interfere with anything.
