NEWBIE HERE, OXYGEN SENSOR QUESTION, PLS HELP!!!

I have a '00 Maxima. My check engine light came on and I know from a mechanic that it is my oxygen sensor(s) that are malfunctioning. However, he is trying to rip me off by telling me that I need to change all four sensors (are there 4?). I went to two AutoZones and they are both giving me different stories as well. One states that I need one oxygen sensor for the front with California emission but I live in NY. Can anyone explain to me what before and after catalytic convertor means? Am I suppose to buy the California emission or Federal emission sensor? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Sorry, but I am a newbie here..lol. Thanks in advance.

your best bet is going to post this in the maxima section of the forum, that or under whatever engine you have to get a quick and through responce.

however I doubt all 4 went out at the same time, but they probably will follow closly. Don't take my word on this, ask in the right forum for a more helpful insite.
