Help please! Problem with Evap Canister, purge control valve, and vent control valve
Hi all,
My service engine soon light had been on for about 2 weeks and I took my 2002 nissan pathfinder into the dealership. They informed me that somehow the styrofoam on top of the charcoal in the evaporation canister was leaking and allowing the vaccuum system to suck charcoal through my emissions. In the process, my vent control valve and my purge control valve were damaged.
When I asked how this could have happened, the mechanic told me that Nissan has a "theory" that if the gas tank is overfilled gas can crawl up the tube that connects the gas tank to the evaporation canister and destroy the styrofoam, allowing charcoal to get sucked up through the vacuum. The problem here, is that I had brought my car to another nissan dealership and informed them that I was having problems filling my gas tank; as in, I would begin to fill it but it would stop often and overflow out of the tank. So, naturally, I have overfilled my tank. However, nissan told me that there was nothing wrong.
what can I do, if anything? I really feel that this is a manufactoring error and even though the car now has 55,000miles on it the problem with the gas tank was reported much earlier so warranty should cover it. However, the Nissan dealer says that it's not their fault, it's not the other nissan dealership's fault, and i just have to suck it up and pay for it. I am very new at all this and would really appreciate some feedback. Thanks!!!
