cel on -cruise not engaging

1995 sentra gxe auto ,at 50k miles cel came on. got code read as vehicle speed sensor,though speedo continues to work fine but cruise won't engage.i replaced vss at transaxle,got cel reset . cel came back on 2 days later .nissan tech says it needs cluster.has anyone had this problem and repaired it themselves w/o replacing cluster?i'm concerned if i replace cluster and light comes on again ,they may say ecu next.speedo and odo work fine.cruise light comes on at switch but engage light on dash doesn't

my cruise control stopped working, the hose came un-attatched, it was a 2 second fix, but it didnt throw a CEL light... check the cruise control module, its located in the engine bay right behind where the steering wheel would be.

the hose is ok,the thing is the cruise will work fine after the cel is reset,but it only stays off for a day or two
