Air Bag

i have a 99 nissan maxima 5 speed se that i just got about 3 months ago. my air bag light stays flashing on after the 7 second initial start up check, any idea as to what it could be - i read about the different modules for the system on the model i purchased but the only info i can get on them is to take the car to the dealership for servicing....

There is a TSB for 98-99 for faulty side air bag modules. Apparently, quite a few on the org has this problem. As is the case with TSB's, coverage beyond the warrantee period is assumed not to be the case but if you contact Nissan corporate customer service, it is possible they may cover the costs out of good will. My dad is currently awaiting word to see if they will.

The dealer will charge you about $80-100 just to pull codes from the SRS system. Airbag modules cost $400 or more.

Some minor codes can be cleared by putting the SRS system in diagnostic mode: open driver's door, put key in and turn to on, press rubber door open button 5 times within 7 sec. of "on". You may see the airbag light start blinking codes and it may or may not ultimately stop. Turn key to off. Some codes require a special SRS scan tool to reset stored codes but if there is a component fault (as is the case with the aforementioned TSB) the light will return.

One good thing though is that the air bag is considered a major component with Nissan. As such there is a 5-yr component warranty. Call your local Stealership, I mean Dealership, and see if you might be in luck.

Air Bag

wow, you were right on the money.

i did a little more research on the matter as i can tend to be a bit impatient at times, i guess and found that the air bag was still covered under warranty although i couldn't get the dealership to admit to it up front. the warranty goes for 5 years or 100 km's, my maxima only has 83 000 - 76 when i bought it.

when i discovered the warranty i figured i would roll the dice at the dealership with the warranty. i also found that code reset that speak of by using the search method for air bag problems but i wasn't convinced that it would work because there were some challenging threads and in all honesty it does seem like a goofy reset but i have seen worse.

i also didn't want to reset the fault code without knowing what the problem was - that's poor troubleshooting unless your trying to recreate the problem.

the dealership was actually helpfull in the end and has chosen to cover driver side air bag at no cost to me including labour - which is awesome. they than proceeded to charge me way to much for a set of NGK plugs and a couple of oil filters - do you know of a place to get good parts for the max online without having to mortgage your house for them? and does anyone know how to get your hands on a scanner i'm assuming it would be a big ticket item...

i do have one newbie question as well, what's a tsb (i think that's how you put it) - your allowed to ask stupid questions when your new.

thanks again for the help, hopefully i can return the favor in the near future.

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin...
Check out this site.

As for the other replacement items, I would just go to an auto parts store. NGK can be had at NAPA Auto Parts and for oil filters I have always gotten Bosch. (I just like their oil filters)

Glad to be of some help for you...good luck.
