Question Intro and quick Question

Hey guys just wanted to introduce myself and ask a quick question. Well I live in New Jersey and I drive(soon hopefully, i first need to get my license and to register my car and also get insurance!) a 99 Nissan Sentra GXE limited. I wanted to know if the Sentra has a timing belt or a timing chain, as I bought the car with 90k on it, and the guy said he never changed the belt but it works fine. Also, does anyone in NJ know any good car insurance companies ? <--- that's how i feel being on a driving forum with no license Aargh!

Oh great, you never have to change chains so I am home free! Guys another Newb question, My sentra has what looks like 20 in. clearnace between the wheel and the top of the wheel well. How hard is it to get bigger RIMS? I.E I know that you need to get the same placement of the caps for it, but can I just go bigger without any other changes? Also, what Can i expect to pay for the whole setup? 4 Rims and the tires that go wth them. Thank a lot for the input. Also, Can I upload any pics of my car anywhere?

playa123,

browse se-r.net for some suspension setups and information, definitely read the faqs , especially by mike kojima.
as for posting pics, read the faq for this forum. you'll find that you have to post your pics on a website and then link to this forum. there's a specific way you have to do it, though.

it's really helpful to do some research on your own beforehand, that way you can get to your really big questions. sentra.net is another sentra resource that definitely gets my respect.
welcome to the forum. i had a 99 gxe before, too.

suspension/wheel mods and their costs depends on how much you are willing to spend and what it is you are trying to do: just for looks? performance?

I'm mostly trying to go for looks, extracting more power out of a small 1.6 liter engine is not a good idea, as I need this car to last me through college. Also, if i do get bigger rims ( imthinking like 17'' as 19 are a little TOO flashy, will I have to raise the car as well to compensate for less space in the wheel well?

i have 17's and a 40 profile tire and my car is lowered 2.5" front and 2" rear. you can click on the 2nd and 3rd links in my sig. to see pics of my car and see if thats the look you want. some have put 19's on their b14's..so the bigger you could go would be 19.

Hehe, i checked out the car, looks sick. What do you have against Altezza's though? To lower the car, you need to buy new shocks and struts right?Do you do all those adjustments yourself, or do you go to the shop?

i just dont like them bc..i dunno...everyone has them..well thats not it..i just dont like them but hey that's just my opnion. i did most everything on my car myself and with the help of my friend. when lowering your car it's good to upgrade the struts and shocks, but i was stupid and didnt so 2 years later i'm paying for it w/a crappy ride and not enough cash flow to solve the problem.

But if i just added 17 inchers on, I wouldn't NEED to change it right? It's all planning at this point, I still need money for insurance and all that stuff. What I do like is all the REALLY cheap stuff on Ebay. If I were to add all those sick amps and speakers etc. do i have to upgrade my wiring or any of that? As for Altezza's, they're cool, but i think they're too much of an offset for the rest of the car when that's the only thing added on to it. Some people have like a 94 bronco or something with just altezza's and it looks stupid. You say you and a friend did all of these improvements, do any of you have any other car experience? I mean, where did you learn all the stuff tat you need to know for the car?

i learned everything about this car and other nissans on sentra.net, se-r.net, the sentra mailing list, and these forums. until about a year and 1/2 ago about the only thing i could is change oil and do a tune up...my friend went to college to be a ford tech...learned everything about how to do things from working on my car and his stang. now i can do about anything except change a rear end gear or rebuild a transmission. if you just upgrade your rims you wouldnt have to change anything except depending on how the lug holes on the rims are, you might need tuner lugs. you dont have to upgrade your wiring to install aftermarket speakers, but for amps and subs you will need the appropriate wiring. ebay does have some good deal but just watch out for some poor quality parts on there. you have to know what not to buy or you will regret it down the road.
