What exactly is the purpose for the giant mufflers on these types of cars. I was at the shop getting an alignment and I happened to notice an import on the lift getting new tires. I walk over and look underneath. Had to have been a 5" muffler with a 3-3.5" exit. The input side of the muffler, maybe, MAYBE 1.25". The whole exhaust from the manifold back was 1.25", Maybe. What is the point of these mufflers?
The tip is nothing but cosmetic. I agree I think the giant tips are kind of obxious. The actual pipe leading up the muffler and the piping in the muffler is what's important. Of course, I have a GReddy exhaust and it isn't exactly the smallest.
it's because they are stupid and what you would call 'rice'... I have a magnaflow 2.5" muffler... and 2.5" exhaust from the turbo back... it's a neccesity for me!
The header is not a necessity. A cat back will give you better performance, if you dont have enough money just go for a cat back. the exhaust does not stay in the header long enough to make that big of a hp increase, so if you cant afford it dont sweat it.

h the exhaust does not stay in the header long enough,,,,is exactly why it does boost HP. In my experience on a a sentra header boosted mid and high-end the most, where the stock exhaust manifold would be flowing its maximum and getting red-hot (100MPH), the header just wants to let the car go even faster and never gets red-hot.
The speed of the exhaust gas flowing is what makes an exhaust perform better. Stock exhaust slows it down and restricts it to keep it quiet.
