What kind of gas are you using on a 3.5 lt engine?

I think the manual on my 2001 Pathfinder says that premium gas (91 octane and higher) is recommended for the 3.5 liter engine, and this is what I have been using.
A buddy of mine has the same truck, and he has never used premium, and has never had a problem.
Is he just lucky, or is premium gas not that necessary?
Thanks,
Erik

THE PREMIUM IS NOT THAT NECESSARRY. BUT SINCE YOU HAVE BEEN RUNNING IT YOU WILL NOTICE A DIFFERANCE IN PERFORMANCE IF YOU GO TO REGULAR. BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER

Stick to what the manufacturers specs say...stick with 91.
Higher gas prevents detonation within the chambers

I use midgrade in the I35. Premium fuel will give you more power but you can use whatever fuel you want, the knock sensor will retard the timing.
