Hi, everyone. I recently purchased my first Maxima. I have been looking for the right one for a long time and finally bingo: 98 Max, GLE, leather, roof, BOSE...all the toys. I love the sound system. It is badass for factory, but I could use a bit more bass. I want to add an amp and a 12" sub, but I am definately staying with the original head unit. How should I go about it Thanks for all your help!
I think the maxima headunit has a pre-amp, so you can run one amp from it. My friend has an amp and 2 12s on his accord v6 with the stock headunit, so you should have no issue

In the trunk there are 2 factory subs and each seems to have its own amplifier permanently attached to it. Are those the preamps you were talking about? Or do I have to remove the head unit from the dash?
hi there! the preamp is supposed to be at the head unit. See if you can find front, rear, sub output on the rear of the head unit. You can actually scroll through the functions/menus on the head unit to find out. If you can find settings for front, rear, sub then you are on the right track......the head unit has a preamp. The purpose of the preamp is to direct the right low frequencies to your subwoofers.
THE HONDA RADIO IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT. I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO DO IT WITH OUT NOISE BUT HERE GOES. YOU NEED A LINE LEVEL CONVERTER THIS MAKES RCA PRE-OUTS FROM THE SPEAKER WIRES FROM THE RADIO. THEN JUST HOOK UP AN AMP AS USUAL.

I WOULDN'T SPEND A LOT OF TIME LOOKING FOR A PRE-AMP BUILT INTO THE RADIO. I HAVE YET TO SEE ONE IN A FACTORY BOSE HEAD UNIT. IF I WERE YOU I WOULD CHANGE THE HEAD UNIT FIRST. OBVIOUSLY YOU ARE UNHAPPY WITH THE WAY IT SOUNDS OTHERWISE YOU WOULDN'T WANT TO CHANGE IT. NEXT TIME YOU GO TO CIRCUIT CITY JUST TAKE A LISTEN TO SOME OF THE NEW HEAD UNITS, I THINK YOU WILL BE IMPRESSED.

The thing is that I like the head unit a lot. It fits the dash perfectly. The controls are user friendly and looks great at night. I can't think of a replacement player that could substitute it looks-wise. But if connecting an amp to it would produce noise, forget it!
I just wondered if anyone had a similar BOSE system and did this kind of conversion.
But I appreciate your inputs.
i am not saying that it isn't possible. however it has been my experience that most people are not satisfied with the results and end up replacing the head unit anyway.
