there are a few altimas.net people going for the bluebird look. there was even a post where someone found a japanese ebay page selling ALTIMA logo's for the japanese bluebird. kinda ironic eh?
yeah, they can't call it a bluebird in north america because bluebird is a school bus manufacturer here. legal snafu
i think the datsun 510 series was a bluebird, and later the stanza was the bluebird sedan (don't think they sold the center-pillar-less hardtop here). when they made the altima, they sold it as the bluebird sedan in japan with a different looking hardtop not exported here. the hardtop was a lot more popular with jdm, so they soon dropped the altima and went on their own with the bluebird. i don't think subsequent altima models were sold in japan, the bluebird became a different beast altogether
edit: ALONG with a different looking hardtop, sorry

thank you, thats the most ive heard on the subject ever... you learn something new every day.
also, the maxima was indeed a variant of the bluebird in the '80s. here they just left it maxima iirc, but in japan it was initially called the bluebird maxima. like the leopard ultima, it denoted the upscale model of the bluebird, which featured the v-6. the platforms parted company with the '89 models, and the maxima lost popularity in the jdm because everyone considered it the 'americanized' bluebird (the massive headroom made it feel too big for many japanese drivers, and the full-size market frowned on fwd at the time). this should have been a red flag for jdm nissan, but for economic reasons (import quotas to/from america) they brought the us-made altimas back to japan (so they could bring more japan-made cars here). it was a predictable failure, they didn't like the high roofline or rounded look (nor the ka24de)
well, i for one, am glad they brought the alty here. even though i can afford to drive something much more expensive, this little car has personality and its fun to drive.... MORE, TELL ME MORE! lol.
yuk yuk! looks like the u13 alty-bluebirds were around from 1991-95, and it wasn't the high roofline they disliked because subsequent bluebirds were almost the same height (but 40mm shorter). here are links to some pics of the u13 hardtop:
