POP stalling

Hi Guys,

I was browsing the site and found this on the 350Z thread

morepower2 wrote:

"So I built a carbon fiber airbox that shields the Twin POP from errant breezes and water. Glenn Nakata has a prototype if any of you want to see it. This airbox also stops the stalling you get when you push in the clutch of a POP equipped car while moving. With my airbox, you can remove the plastic shield that blocks the radiator air entirely for better cooling as well."

I have a 2000 Maxima SE with the 5 speed and I have experienced this disturbing and dangerous phenomenon. I bought the car with the POP on it. I've never heard of this happening in the seven years that I was on the SE-R mailing list. ( I had a 93 before this Maxima) It always happens in the middle of a turn, and it sucks to lose steering and brake assist when you need it most!

If anyone can help me resolve this issue you may be helping to save a life, because I dread the day this happens when I'm really pushing it and need all the brake and streering I can get.

Thanks for your time.

Dewin

hi dewin, welcome to nissanforums. i quoted your post, and put it up as a new thread in the general section of the maxima forum, i hope someone has a good solution

in the interim, i read the thread you found that z post from, and it appears to be an air turbulence issue. since you said it stalls out when you make a turn, that just might be it. one poster suggested putting a length of pipe in front of the pop charger to maintain airflow. others said it might just be better to replace the pop charger with a cai. cai's seem to be more resilient to turbulence, and that might be one of the reasons why you haven't seen it on the sentra forum. also might be that the underhood airflow doesn't get whacked on sentras while turning

i did searches under 'popcharger', 'stall', 'stalling', even 'wolf' for jim wolf's popular pop-charger, but nothing in the maxima forum linking stalling to pop-chargers. three threads on stalling had to do with maf's, fuel, even oil pressure. so i hope the thread generates results for you, i wish i could have been of more help. good luck, fellow nissan driver!

Hi Lurker,

Thanks for the reply and the time you spent researching this issue. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

From what I've seen, there have been a lot of issues with intakes on the 5th gens. Oiled filters causing buildup on the MAF diode, and causing the MAF to go bad. Try checking out your MAF sensor...
