new guy with no spark

i found this site looking for answers to a older truck question i have a 87 hb pickup with 1/2 a mil. on it it runs great for months then dies (no spark)? let it sit for a week. it fires up agin and the problem starts over agin? changed plugs n wires, cap n rotor, coil, relay, ready to take five( five gallons of gas and a book of matches). i would like to give this truck to my son to learn to drive in but its not dependable. for the intermitant spark problem i curently looking for lose wires or ground problems. am i going the rightway.

Have you made sure the distributor is is bolted down nice and tight? Dizzy bolts have the tendency to work themselves loose. A little bit of loctite would help.

Welcome to the forums. I think you are correct in checking for good earths, also check that the wiring from the negative side of the coil is sound and is not earthing to the body or it acts just like a kill switch. Also make sure the ignition switch is ok, it might have worn and not have good contacts which cause the intermittent problem.
