03 Frontier Misfire

I have an '03 Frontier w/ 4 cyl. auto. The engine shudders under light acceleration. If I press the pedal on down or let off completely, it stops missing. I am getting a code for "#1 cyl. misfire". I replaced plugs, wires, cap, and rotor with no improvement. The same code still pops up. I have noticed the tailpipe is black and sooty. My mileage has also went from 26 mpg to 18. Any ideas???
