2001 Maxima - Service Engine Soon

First time poster here. I am the original owner of a 2001 Maxima SE with auto transmission. About a year ago, after filling my tank with gas, my service engine soon light went on. I read somewhere that this could be caused by not tightening your gas cap enough and, if that was the cause, the light will go out when you next re-fill your tank. I didn't believe it, but that is what actually happened.

Now, a year later, after filling my gas tank - the light went on again. This time, after re-filling my tank about 5 times, the light is still on.

Has anyone else experienced a similar thing?

Follow Up

I forgot to mention that I am trying the old.....disconnect the battery and let the computer reset trick. I am really just wondering if I have a bigger problem than that to deal with.

Thanks.

maybe, maybe not.

Sometimes the seal around the gas cap can go bad as well.

You're best bet is to go to autozone or advanced auto and let them know your SES light is on. THey have a computer that they can hook up to your car and read the code and diagnose the problem for you, or at least get you going in the right dirrection. If they can't figure it out, get the code # from them, come back here and post it in the maxima forum and someone there could help you out more then I could, since they have the same car.

Thanks. The SES light hasn't gone off after disconnecting the battery. I am going to go to Autozone sometime this week.
