The Spare Engine.....and where it will lead me!

So planned on the calendar for next saturday is for me to pick up a spare VQ35DE, with the help of a rental car company and a friend with straps and a tarp.

So why am I getting a spare longblock? Well, first, what IS a longblock?
  • A longblock, generally speaking, is a complete motor. Simply, the block (cylinder block) and the heads, with a front timing cover, and maybe some accessories, depending on how lucky you are.

I don't need the accessories because I'll simply swap mine over to it. The only important thing to me is the block and the heads.

So why am I getting a spare longblock?

Let me list off the reasons:
  1. Eagle H-beam connecting rods
  2. Arias 8.5:1 forged pistons
  3. Cosworth rod and main bearings
  4. ARP head studs
  5. ARP main studs
  6. JWT valvespring kit
  7. Some secret stuff.........

I'm getting a longblock so I can assemble a built motor while I daily drive the 350z. This way, I'll be in no rush to complete it, meaning I can make sure all machining is done properly, and all assembly is precise and clearances are measured and within tolerances.

This will make for a much more reliable engine when finished, and one that will be the most efficient at making horsepower and maintaining high horsepower levels without failing.

One thing to keep in mind when building a motor is to have the rotating drivetrain precision balanced.
Why is this important?
When you purchased your car, your motor was specifically made to run with the pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, flywheel, and crankshaft pulley that came in the car. Since I'm replacing the connecting rods, pistons, flywheel, and most likely crankshaft pulley, I must take these parts to a machine shop to have it assembled properly, and so that they can balance the parts together as a whole to prevent any damaging vibrations that may occur.

Also, many aftermarket parts companies say their parts are balanced off the assembly line, but that does not mean they balance together with other parts or even with that part's specific brother or sister.

So, when this motor arrives, expect pictures as we mount it on the stand and start the tear down! We'll show you specific parts inside the motor where improvements can be made via upgrading parts or simple cleaning or porting/polishing.

Please, please, please! You have to go to AEBS.com (Advanced Engine Breathing Systems) and get the 4.3litre stroker kit with the 11.5:1 compression ratio... You will get over 400 NA ponies, which is... as Borat likes to say, "it's niiiiiice" and "why not, I will like it!" Then after you get that, you must tell me how it worked out... I can't do this for myself yet because having a late birthday is super-gay. I was planning on building a VQ43de, but considering my current status, situation, and age (which will change in exactly a month) I am unable to source the materials for such a job. Food for thought: Just picture a 95' RHD Silvia (have that... through military family connections) with a VQ43de, it would just scream like none other.

END

unfortunately, most reviews for the AEBS kit have been negative, with extra maching work needed, and for such a steep price, it's not necessary.

Also, I'd be hard pressed to see 400hp n/a just by increasing the displacement like that in the VQ, losing revs due to the increased stroke.

That and it seems like its a PITA to keep it running, at least thats what injected is experiencing with their Z.

Granted, it is right now at 19# and upwards around 730 whp, however that doesn't matter much if you can't drive it.

agreed, the displacement increase wont necessarily give more power, if the whole injection system is the same, then theres only the same amount of fuel and air going in, a larger displacement will just drop the amount of revs.
