Removing the Taillights

Hey everyone, i have a quick question. I want to remove my taillights from my 03 altima. I remember watching my freind do it off of his 96 maxima and there was this black sticky sealent around the lights. i was wondering if the altima also had this sealent and also, if i remove the lights and put them back, will i need to reseal it or will it glue itself back in place?

Yes, there is a sealent between the light assembly and the body of the car.
You will need to replace the sealent if you remove the taillight assembly
and put a new tailight assembly on.

That's messed up then. I cracked the taillight lens of my '02 Altima. Bought a new taillight at dealer. The new taillight came with the sealant, but when I took the broken original taillight off, no sealant. I didn't put the sealant on because I didn't want to mess with it but I easily could. How important is the sealant if the factory didn't even put it on? It seemed that the light was pretty well sealed up on it's own.
