I have my factory blowtenza RE92's on my car and was going downtown the other night. (around 1:30am) I was doing 120+ from 290 & Jones down to I-10 East, took the overpass at 85 and continued into downtown. (made it from 1960 to the Pierce exit in 13 minutes) Where I was going was just off of the freeway. I noticed while going thru downtown my tires were picking up a lot of gravel, I could hear it inside my wheel wells. When I got out and checked my tires they were sticky as warm drag radials. They were very very sticky! I thought, maybe my tires heated up too much and proceded to check my tire pressures. I normally keep my fronts at 40 and rears at 35-37, depending on how much freeway driving I am doing. They were only above my normal pressure by ~1-1.5 psi. I know that if they did heat up that much then they would not have had time to cool in the 2 minutes it took for me to park my car and get out. What happened to my tires? Was it just surface temperature on my treads that heated up like that or is there other causes? I don't have any damage to my tires, I'm not worried, just curious as to what the cause of the super sticky tread about.
could be just the dirty ass roads in downtown....isn't there lots of construction going on?
Yeah, but I didn't really hit any of the streets that had construction. I also heard my tires picking up gravel and throwing it around in my wheel well long before I got to downtown. Maybe one night I will try this again to see if it was something something on the road or not.
What about driving over a patch of tar os asphalt?
With the cooler temps lately, I wouldn't think you would pick up anything, but I've sene it happen before... drive over a patch of tar and take some with you on the tires......
same thing happens here when i roll on my r-compounds, what's the treadwear on those potenzas?? and when you fly by at those speeds, tires will really heat up fast, wish i could do that.

Well the thread wear were 160,it was very soft,so it could be that the compound get heat up easily. After all it's a very good summer tires, but it was terrible in rain though.
it's true then, with really low treadwear rating, the tire heats up faster and picks up anything at high temps, r compounds only have 50 and i already need a new set. basically rolling on a pencil eraser or gum.

lol- are they grippy though? cuz im looking for a new set for the my spec-v. what do you guys suggest? i have the stock conti-sports, but i drifted ( ass dragged) the rear set off
R compounds grab so good that it's like WHOA, but the drawback is the wear. Gulf Greyhound owned my set and because of the surface, it's rougher than my carpet, and slips without warning. Oh that's another thing, when you slip or start to, there's no squeal to warn you, you just start slipping and better hold on.
