2001 Maxima Y-pipe Install

Hi, this is ryan with the only light blue maxima at the HNE meet before the austin caravan, just recently got on the forum. I plan on being at the october meet also along with my friend with his 91 300zx tt that he just purchased. But anyways, I was wondering if anyone knows of a muffler shop in houston that will actually install the y-pipe i just purchased, i went to ripley's on kurkendahl and 1960 and they refused saying it wouldn't pass emissions even though i know it will. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey david, not sure if you remember me, i was the 17 year old with the blue 2001 gxe who showed up late and talked to you and rob for around 30 minutes after the meeting about what i planned on doing to my max, like the front lip and y pipe, and you even made an offer to help me install it using a lift that u knew about if i remember correctly. I was wondering since you are a cop, if you could explain to my dad briefly on the phone that the y-pipe is in fact legal in texas contrary to what ripley's says, because he trusts them and because of what they said he's forcing me to return it even though i know they are wrong. It would be greatly appreciated. Also explaining to him that it won't blow up my car might help as well, my dad is crazy btw lol. Sucks that he paid for a little over half of my car.

The pipe is legal so long as the car doesn't fail emisions. Since there are three cats on the Max, removing the two pre-cats, and leaving the real cat, means that the car is still legal. Just make sure the car is at normal operating temp before smog sniffing it.

Just a little more to what David has already posted. The main cat works only once the car reaches normal operating temps. On a Nissan that about two miles at most. The precats work BEFORE the normal temps are reached. After that they don't do anything. Hope that makes sense. The emissions testing rules says the car's emissions are to be tested with the car at normal operating temps. Any other questions, just post up.

I believe the guy with the lift you are referring to is Frank. His handle on here is 96_vqmax. Might want to drop his a PM. See the thread I'm getting ready to post about projects, I've got the same project as you. Maybe we can get them done at the same time.

Which y-pipe did you get? If your 17, I'm probably older than your Dad. Tell him it OK, even us old guys are doing this.

Getting them done at the same time works for me. I have the 2001 cali-spec budget y-pipe.

ha ha. yeah right. Actually the guy who just bought this place was going to put a mobile audio shop in and do import performance stuff along with it, but he hasn't done it yet. The whole building is empty, and he told me that if I want to use it, to give him a call and I could go get the key. It Rocks.
