97 2.4L Engine Toast @ 98K

I have a 97 HB 4X4 4 cyl 5spd. The engine just developed a terrible knock in the lower end. It is not worth rebuilding. I have been looking in slavage yards for a replacement engine. I was wondering what would drop right in? The guy in one of the yards said the 93 will fit but I will need to change the induction system and eletrical. Honestly I have never swapped an engine but i don't have the money to pay someone else to do it. I want to get an engine that I can just drop in and reconnect all the wires and compenents. Can I only do this with a 96 or 97?

Hmm, that sucks about the knock.

I know at least one difference in the 96-97 KAs from the earlier ones, and that's the EGR and evap system. I'm not sure about compatibility between the two, but I can't imagine it being too difficult.

The intake tube is slightly different, too. On the 96-97s, the intake tube runs straight from the fender. The earlier ones use a box and then the tube. I don't think that would matter, though.

I'm not expert in KA engined HBs, but couldn't you just use the 93 long block and retain your intake, electrical etc?
