Just curious, but how do you weld an exhaust system? I mean what type of welds are most common> tig, mig, stick welding?
I'm interested in taking up welding but the only thing I can think of to weld would be an exhaust system maybe with some mandrel bends.
I don't have much money so Tig welding is out of the question. Would a low cost Mig welder with flux wire be good?
I understand stick welding is relatively cheap but the quality ain't so great. I would like some versatility in my welding rig considering I have no idea what all I may want to weld next.
I took an entry-level welding course once... All I learned were arc and oxy-acetylene. I like the oxy-acetylene.. but I don't really know if it has any practical use involving an exhaust system, never having done one. I would assume that some sort of flux wire is used.. you should ask someone at a local muffler shop.

ya...u can MIG an exhaust system just fine. i would recommend using some argon/co2 and some mild steel wire over the flux if ur fabricating a mild steel exhaust system.

Thanks Javier .
I understand you're a very experienced welder so it makes total sense that you would recommend argon/co2 over flux wire.
I still can't help but wonder, is flux wire a good alternative to gas?
I'm a beginner on a tight budget so I would prefer the least expensive MIG setup available.
Also, any idea what type of amperage should I be looking for in a MIG welder?
i just prefer the gas because it comes out "prettier" u dont have to scrape off all the slag like u do when u use teh flux. a good starter mig setup with gas shouldnt cost more than $500.00 (this includes the bottle, gas, cheap helmet, and wire) we have a lil hobart 135 MIG at teh house. it works pretty good for small stuff....up to 3/16" thick stuff. it runs on 110v and is rated up to 135amps IIRC. it came with a flux wire spool too, but ive never used it.
my question is that when you mig weld some pipes together say for an exhaust system, do you push the weld as you go along at an angle to get the flat nice look. I am welding a cracked exhaust manifold for my motorcycle and want it to look nice. I am using the gas mig welder. Any help is always appreciated.
Usually with a mig setup you'll push the weld at a slight angle. It really depends on the wire and gas. And the materal your weldin on. I could show ya easyer than I could tell ya. Sorry know this dosn't help much.

I'd practice the weld a few times on some scrap. Try and simulate the condition to see what works best.

500.00 DOLLARS!
Thats a lot of money to me. I was hoping to get started for 2 maybe 300 but yeah 500 would get me a nice little welder and then some.
I need a friend with a MIG so I can just borrow it when needed.
