How exactly do spacers work? From my understanding they're used when someone adds fender flares, and in order to make the wheels match up and all. Is this just for appearance or are spacers actually used as a performance upgrade? Thanks.

Spacers are used to gain wheel clearence. if you have flares like you said, you might want to use spacers or your car will look funny. but also, they will help clear stuff if you use coilovers or Z brakes.
