Inadvertant panic

I drive a '98 200sx SE-R equipped with some sort of factory alarm system. Although I've never accidentally tripped the alarm, it has a blinking light in the dash and it says security on it, and my remote has a panic button. Recently, my car alarm has been going off, and when i go to shut it off there is no one in sight. This has happened at least 5 times over the past month. Yesterday, a 2004ish accord down the street had its alarm go off twice within 3 hours when no one was near it, and I hear other alarms going off in my neighborhood frequently. Does anyone know the nature of how these remotes work, and does anyone have any idea what could be setting them off? I'm assuming that it emits a frequency and that something in the area is omitting the same frequency, but whatever is doing that is also varying its frequency since it's setting off different cars....
