10w-30 works for most conditions. DEpending on your mileage, synthetic oil usually works the best. If your mileage is high however, you may find that the synthetic formula's detergents may open up some leaks where the seals are worn. AS long as you pay attention to the possible leak issue, I think using good synth oil is the single greatest thing you can do for the longevity of your car. People on bobistheoilguy.com seem to have good luck with redline, mobil, amsoil, and royal purple synths. Oil filter wise I suggest wix, pure one, napa gold, and mobil one filters. Just stay as far away from fram(other than xd) as you can. The build quality on fram filters are just plain sad.

synthetic are great, but you pay for them.

Another great thing to do would be to find out what the previous owner used and continue to use them, as long as they wern't using a no-name brand.

Nissan oil filters are always a good way to go as well.

There are owners manuals available on the Nissan web site for free.

Also you can download the 96 B14 Factory Service Manual (FSM) available here as a sticky. This may help with most issues, my understanding is the 98 and 99's have some cosmetic/ trim parts different and ECU - OBDII but are basically the same mechanically.

Good Luck, they are great cars .....

engine oil replacement

Just curious as we are talking about engine oil.

My nissan dealership uses 10w30 instead of the manual recommended 5w30 from the manual of a 1995 nissan sentra.

Anyway my question is when it gets low... Can I replace it with any brand 5w30 (instead of the 10w30) or do I have to replace it with the same brand 10w30?

you can change to 5w anytime you like. you can even mix the two together and get 7.5w oil

Here is the page for the B14 chassis forum
At the top are messages that stay at the top of the forum.
They are called sticky's because they stay put and don't move down as they get old.

I think a lot of dealers use bulk oil, and may not carry a lot of different grades. I purchased my Sentra at Mitsu dealership, and received free oil changes with 10w-30 Castrol for 75,000 miles. 10w-30 is a little more shear stable. With 5w-30 you may get a little better fuel economy. They will both be 30 weight when warm. I now use Havoline 10w-30, since it is a good dino, readily available, and goes on sale alot. You don't have to stick with one brand of oil when replacing. It is better to use the same brand for topping off (though I don't follow that much of the time).

Truth alone triumphs, not untruth. :)

x2 on the havoline. Probably the best of the mass marketed conventional oils.
