Could anyone of you help me how to reach the oil filter? from above or below the engine? Do we have enough space to reach it from below the engine? Haynes manual says change oil, replace drain plug, lower the car and change the oil filter so I assume that means to remove from above? and Do I need special wrench to remove it.
Thanks

haha i get the filters that have the grip on the end, and i just unscrew them with my bare hand. oh yeah, take your shirt off before you reach up there, unless you like shirts becomming rags. every time i change the oil in my sentra, the oil goes all the way down my arm. fram makes the filters im talking about 3682 is the number i think.

If you buy a K&N oil filter, there is a place on the end where you could use a 14-15mm wrench to turn the thing. I doubt you have a K&N filter there now, but if this is a repeating problem for you, you may want to try the K&N. The problem is, they run for around $10, when the nissan ones are half that or more, and just as good.

LOL, i did that the other day. Oill all over my arm
interesting i didn't even know that...K&N makes good air filters, but i've been weary of their oil filters 'cause of the price.

heynes is right most of the time, but sometimes they just give generic instructions--like what you're experiencing.
on the 1.6L the filter is reached from the bottom
on the 2.0L though, the filter is reached from the top--they might be talking about that engine cus its in the same book.
and i dont take my shirt off...my farmer's tan has been intact for 4 years, im not ruining THAT for a little oil lol.
i found that if you lay next to the tire on the passenger side and reach over the axel you can get at the filter without dripping oil on your arm...although i wouldn't reccomend doing that with your sunday best--the axel it dirty too lol.
(my girlfriend has a 98 sentra, i have a 92 se-r--i've worked on both engines)
BikerFry: "Fram's are crap. For an extra buck or whatever, get an OEM filter from your local Nissan dealership."
Yep. Frams are about the $#itiest piece of $#it going. I wouldn't put one on an old lawn mower.
The OEM Nissan filter is a pretty good unit ... but I think I'd only buy them in bulk or at a discount ... say $4 or so each.
The best filter for a Nissan ever? The best one I've seen to date is a Wix (I'm talkin' part #1356, I think). So well made, it's almost a shame to throw them out after just a few thousand miles.
Thanks guys. So, I need to become dirty that's fine. I know that Fram filters suck because my friends Miata screwed because of that filter. but anyways I only drive 1000 miles every 3 months, thats why my 12 year old car has 95k miles. and I change oil and filter every 3 months. So I will be O.K I guess, I bought purolator (not sure about the spelling) filter which claims that it is much better than the leading brand.
And Tavel, you are right, I didnt think that haynes include SR20 as well. That's a good reminder for everyone so we shouldnt expect exact instructions from that book.
