strange oil leak

hi all
i have a 92 nissan sentra 1.6l auto and under the hood, i see oil all over the engine. it surely isnt leaking from the engine head, but it seems to come somewhere near the distributor area as the distributor is covered in oil, i mean i can see some oil holding at the bottom part of the distributor. its very strange how the oil comes till the distributor. anyway the leak isnt bad as the oil level doesnt go bad very often. but all i am worried is if it gonna be bad in the long run?
thanks

Post Problem.

You shoudl pull off the valve cover and buy a new valve cover seal. You'll also need to reapply RTV to the distributor area. I bet the RTV and or valve cover gasket is leaking.

if you see oil concentrating around the area where distributor meets the valve cover, then it is possible that the leak comes from the distributor.

To check, remove the distributor cover and see if there is evidence of oil or burnt oil.

If yes, then remove the entire distributor and check the O ring.

It's quite likely that the O ring is worn out or hardened , which results in the leak.

A drippy distributor will result in hard starts and poor ignition firing and in the long run, high fuel consumption.

I had a similar problem. Replaced the distributor and by chance, saw that the O ring had worn out.

After that, no more leak.

Also check the engine cover (near the distributor) for RTV that may have been dislodged and caused a gap where the oil will flow out.

Another check is the engine cover seal (shaped like the outline of the engine cover.. as mentioned below). If it's hardened, then time to change it.

Hope it helps.

If you can't find the leak easily, degrease and wash the engine really good and get it nice and dry, then check on it every day to see where the leak develops from.

If you have oil near the alternator I would have to say it's the front crank seal. When it leaks, the oil gets slung around. I have seen some with the alternator just saturated with oil. It can cause the alternator to go bad. As for the distributor leak, I have seen distributors go bad from oil. Those are not cheap to replace.

if you're getting oil all over your alternator and on the belts, and anywhere else in the area, i'd agree with the above. I just had my front crank seal replaced- it leaks, hits the belts and get thrown everywhere. I mean everywhere. But its usually a small common problem with the engine, any nissan dealer can probably fix it for around a 100 bucks (depends on labor and if they need to change the belts)... don't let it go too long, the oil will make the belts loose, and that just can't be good.

think it is the front crank seal

hi

i think it is the front crank seal. the leak used to be small before. say, i find some oil hanging onto the oil pan and the cv rod. then i made a very long trip to the smokies in NC for the weekend and today I am back home in FL and i see oil all over the lower engine area. the internal area of the wheels, the cv rod alternator belts and all other belts in that area.

how bad has it become given the fact that i drove 1600 miles for the weekend and the oil level going from high to 30%high in 3 days?

mine has a bunch of sludgey looking oil right on that flat spot near the passenger side headlamp to the left of the water resovoir. i'm going to check put it on a lift and check it out next semister when we go back to school. how much does a front crank seal cost anyway? just the crank seal not labor i can get that for free.

front main seals on our cars suck ass! it seems like everyone w/a ga16de powered car has their's go bad at some point. ya'll should see my engine. i never cleaned the block of anything else the oil got on bc i didnt think it was that bad. but when i changed my belts and took a good look around the engine, it was horrible. btw, gunk engine brite works great at cleaning your engine bay and block. works even better if you have an old toothbrush.
