I just dont know

Today I did a check up on my friends '98 b14 sentra GA16. I noticed there was a rhythmic grinding sound during idle and up to 3k.
So i took the value cover off and checked the shim clearences on the cams everything ok.
Then I check for a worn upper tensioner without taken crap apart (didnt feel like working too hard on a car thats not mine ) It looked okay for the little I could see and the chain has in good shape. Of course I didnt get to see the lower tensioner but i did see part of the other chain and it looked in good shape as well. Friend tells me this sound has been around for about 40K miles

and he never checked into it.

I think if there was something grinding or wearing out for 40,000 mile there would be something noticeable The oil pan was clean of metal frags as well as the filter i cut open to check

I done some research but nothing excatly tell me anything I dont already know.
Is there something else I should look for or it most likely to be the lower tensionser. Help

How many miles on the car? The tensioners are know to go around the 100k mark. Mine was about 5k after and Steves was about 10k under(I think). If you haven't seen a worn upper tensioner before you most likely won't exactly know what to look for. Basically as the chain wears on the tensioner it will form a groove in the plastic part of the tensioner. When it wears through the plastic and hits the metal behind is when it makes noise. It's not very easy to recognize from above. All you can look for is to see if the chain seems to be sitting into the tensioner which still ain't easy. Ask Steve, he couldn't tell but when we took his out it was worse than mine was and he had less miles.

car has about 135XXX miles yeah i really dont know exactly what to look for . the chain appears although i cant see it well to be sitting correctly.

would one of pumps make a similar noise?

ill tell you know its the tensioners like mitch was talkin bout.. its very common in the ga16 motors.. i wasn't really able to see it until i pulled it out.. the lower one is a pain but there is a thread i started bout that somewhere below this...
