Do any of you folks replace vacuum hoses on a preventitive measure basis? I'm going to have a valve cleaning party in the air intake/distribution area this weekend and thought I'd replace a few hoses and clamps (some of those suckers get real soft...). Are these original stock hoses o.k. to be replaced with "standard heater hoses" (same width of course) ? I've already replaced the largest of the ones I'm looking at (5/8",shown in the first picture below, as seen in the Haynes Service Manual; second picture is the whole caboodle for fun...).
You were a little unclear about which hoses you meant. Vacuum hoses are the little black ones, I don't think that heater hose comes in sizes that small. As for other hoses, only use fuel injection hose for fuel stuff. Hoses for coolant you can use heaterhose, it's made for those things.
You can use almost any kind of tubing for vacuum lines. You mention clamps, however, and most vacuum lines don't have them. Might be a good idea to make sure what the lines are really for...
you mentioned 5/8" hose, does this carry water or air, water use a heater hose if its air and that big it must be part of the pcv system, that hose is exposed to high heat so dont use heater hose for it. I have some vacuum lines that are hard as a rock, but thats what I get, I replaced them with some cheap hose
Hmm...I'm a bit confused as well myself. I'm not sure what's what. I guess I mean, is it o.k. to replace an air hose (the large "L-shaped" hose that's in the center of the first picture I linked to) with a standard heater hose. It looks as thick as the original hose that was there? (I've still got the original, maybe I'll plop that guy back on, I might be treading the wrong parts here).
I don't mean fuel or water hoses. Are there special "vacuum hoses" sold in auto parts stores, are they called vacuum hoses, or standard? I just noticed some carbon build-up in and around odds, ends...and hoses. Well, you know, once you start cleaning (and first find out what that and this does), replacing small pieces here and there; a sick need to have everything in tip top shape creeps up on you.
Smoooooth...
i think you're referring to an emissions hose. They sell special emissions hose stuff. It looks basically like heater hose. Heater hose would work, I think i've done that before. I think one of the differences is that emissions hose doesn't collapse as much when making tight bends and might be a bit thicker.
that first link doesn't work and that second link is a picture that's useful to me for identifying things on the ga16de wiring harness.

Wonderful, sounds good..thank you!
You're right, the heater hose is more flimsy, less thick (and does want to collapse at the bend in the "L" shape, compared to the original).
Emission hoses, yes... I must find them.
I replaced mine with goodyear "blue" heater hose. No problems so far.
