i did a search and i couldnt really find the answers i need on these.
how do you know if your car need the timing chain or tenshioner replaced?
i have about 124 , XXX + miles on my car and when i fixed my leak ( oil pressure sending unit) and filled it with oil my friend said that there were some pretty loud noises coming from the valve cover where the timing chain area is.
so i would be doing a valve cover swap to a b13 valve cover soon and i was wondering do you guys think that i should do the replace the tenshioner as well ?
I don't know if you know about these, sounds like you might.
Three service bulletins:
NTB98-107 - Released 01/15/98 - B13,B14 GA16DE Timing Chain/Front Cover Revised Service Procedure
NTB95-047 - 05/03/95 - B13, B14 GA16DE - Timing Chain Guide Tension Broken (Causes noise in that area)
NTB92-056 - 06/30/92 - B13 SR20DE - Timing Chain Tensioner (References a leak down of oil in the chain tensioner. They recommend a countermeasure part to fix problem.)

also how much do those tenshioners cost ?
Well first off timing chain tensioners normally run about $70 a piece from the dealer. I know steve got a whole timing chain kit on ebay for about $100 which is a good deal. The tensioners normally wear out around 100k miles. So if they havent been replaced yet that sounds about right. You'll hear a pretty loud rattle coming from where the timing chain is. You can also take off the valve cover and shine a flash light in there to look at it. It ain't real easy to see but it sits right below the intake cam shaft. The way to recognize a worn tensioner is that it will look its sitting a groove it the tension which it is just that it shouldn't be. If ya have any more question like about intallation just ask.
I have a monkey that continues the post whoring through out the night. His next stop is Pete's house where i taught him how to judo chop cracka ass thugs
damn i hafta have all that for just the timing chain tenshioner kits ?
You don't need most of that to replace the tensioners.
If just doing the tensioners:
Timing Chain Tensioner (Lower)
Timing Chain Tensioner (Upper)
Timing Chain Tensioner Gasket
If doing the guides also:
Timing Chain Guide - Tension Side
Timing Chain Guide - Slack Side
Front Crankshaft Seal
Front Cover O-Rings (2)
It says you need to buy bolts for the guides but I don't see why you would need to. Still it would only add maybe $1.50 to the total.

the guides had a habit of breaking so they changed the design which requires 2 new bolts, the old ones will NOT work. while your in there take the guides for the upper chain out and toss em! If you have a broken guide, your chain maybe rubbing on the front cover which could result in a hole!

In the B14 they aren't any guides for the upper chain, I believe there was a guide for the B13 though.
I think the design change you're talking about is also for the B13, it originally had one bolt but they changed to 2. I think all B14s have 2 bolts on the tension side guide. Not 100% sure about that though.
You're right about the front cover though. If the tensioner is really worn, the chain can eat into the front cover.
Also if you don't want to spend the $$ you can get tensioners from an auto parts store.

ill tell you now, the upper tensioner is a piece of cake, but if you figure out how to get to the lower tensioner, let me and mitch know, we are trying to do ours.. but we haven't had too much time to find out.. there is little to no writeups on the lower, but it sounds like a metal to metal rubbing

Chances are you shouldn't have to remove or replace the timing chain. A visual inspection, which the FSM suggests, will determine whether the chain needs replacing. I have ~118,xxx miles/200,000 Km's on mine and it still looks new.
My I direct your attention to this site for further information and guide replacement:
