Unhappy distributor problem??

Hi all,

My B14 act strangely recently. It always "dead" in the early morning after it go less than 1km, the rpm just drop to 0 and i need to restart the car. It run smoothly after that.

Sometimes, when i turn off my engine while the engine is hot and and try to restart, i need to wait for ~20-30min before the car can be restart.

Someone told me that it is due to distributor problem, and some mechanics told me it is due to the starter. Any specialist can give a piece of advise? How much is the distributor cost?

.. Jon

Well, you can rule out the starter if your car dies after driving a block. Stay away from any mechanics who says otherwise, but you never know ... Do you warm up your car in the morning? Several people on here had distributor problems, you might want to search to see what their symptoms were.

yeah, some mechanics are liars, if the car starts then dies, its not the starter, the starter shuts down after it starts.......is your battery cool? fully charged? and do u know wether its a mechanical problem or electrical, i mean it can be a lot of things wrong with it, check the coolant, it might be overheating. check oil pressure, distributor, plugs, the works

Unhappy

Battery is 3 months old, coolant no problem cause i just change them recently. I also install a new set of spark plug due to this problem. Basically, everything looks fine.

The problem is getting worst nowsaday, with some black smoke coming out from the exhaust when i rev it to 4000-5000rpm. Need some help quickly....

Had a similar problem with another model (Fiat Uno) where the car would just die while driving on the freeway. Crank it again and it'll start, only to have the problem appear again. And it does get worse with time.

If this problem sounds familiar, then it is the distributor. Coz I replaced it and the car worked like a charm.

For the black smoke, I think it might be related to oil leaking into the distributor.
Check the O rings on the distributor and take a clean rag and wip the underside. My 91 Sentra had this problem and replaced the whole distributor completely (300 bucks) and got the mech ensure the oil doesn't leak into the chamber.

A faulty TPS might also give you black smoke as well as a petrol consumption problem.

hope it helps.

ace, thanks for your tips. I'm sending in my car to change the distributor and check for oil leakage.

What is TPS? Do you mean timing check?

you are most welcome.. hope you can fix the problem.

TPS = throttle position sensor.

Located alongside the ECCS. When u step on the gas pedal, you'd see the linkage move and along with it, the TPS.

I actually ran into this problem many times with Nissans. You need to replace the distributor. The sensor acts funny to heat and shuts the ignition(spark) off. Try this test. Bring a big cup of ice water and when it acts up hot, dump it on the base of the distributor(aluminum part, not the cap). this should make it start up again.

your losing your cam signal when cam sensor acts up, usually it is with heat when it does it. these distributors are VERY sensitive. i once accidentaly drop one on a counter and it didnt work again. so make sure you dont drop it or toss the new one in the back of the car when you are leaving the parts store picking up the new one.

good luck, let us know.
