Brown motor oil...

When i changed my oil, it was brown and somewhat more creamy than regular oil should be. It this caused my overheating? I had a overheating incident earlier that day. I also ran my nitrous at tracks a few days earlier. Maybe a factor?

I change my Mobil 1 oil regularly every 3k miles fyi. Thanks for any info.

This could possibly be water in the oil. Usually this is a sign of a bad head gasket.

It's either that or the oil cooler coil in the radiator end tank is leaking coolant into the trans fluid. Check you coolant for oil also.

Okay don't get me wrong I'd just like to try and understand. Verno, are you saying that a possible culprit of brown motor oil would be coolant leaking into the trans fluid? I don't know if the oil is cooled by the radiator (my old gm truck used to be), but certainly if the rad was cracked in that passageway it could allow coolant to mix with the oil. I'm curious to see if his oil is sooled by the radiator because that could be a suspect.
I'd like to guess on the headgasket thing, especially if you overheated it. Have you done a compression test yet? If thats the case you are in for some work. Take the head off (easier said than done, I know), have a machine shop resurface it and pressure test it. Have them pull vacuum on all your valves to see what kind of shape those are in.
Do a compression test...

How does oil getting into the trans fluid affect the motor oil? Logically it would affect the tranny but I don't see where its affecting the motor oil. I may be wrong but just want to be sure of what you are talking about.

Thanks for all the help guys. I just checked my coolant and theres a bit of oil in there. Talked to my mechanic friend, also said gasket.

Anyway, is changing the head gasket a diy thing, or should it be done prefessionally. A place i called quoted me $1000 for it. Whats a decent price?

It's fairly involved, but can be done in your driveway. The most important tool for the job is a Factory Service Manual. It involves draining the coolant, removing the intake conection, exhaust connection, timing chain cover, and cams, before unbolting the head. You might be able to do it in a week-end.

I can do all that stuff, but dont trust myself enough to do it. Funny thing is, i trusted myself enough to install my nitrous, but cant take apart half my motor. I think i'll go to a shop. Thanks.

for $1000 i woulda had one of my car buddies come over and make a day out of it. it's amazing what you can get done when you bribe with beer.

but if it's above your abilities then going to a shop is probably the best thing. you don't wanna risk screwing something up and it costing you even more.

as long as the buddies aren't drinking WHILE work is being done on the car... never seen anything good come from that!

It's not too difficult, just involved. Make sure that the head is not warped as this sometimes happens when you blow a head gasket. Also, why did it blow? Nitrous installed wrong? Bad waterpump that leaked enough coolant to overheat the engine? Bad fan relay or motor? Radiator plugged with dead bugs or other debris? I brutally overheated the KA24DE in my Frontier when the waterpump went and it did not blow a gasket. I overheated it so bad it quit running and the temp gauge was pegged at H, so I am very curious as to why it went.

On some cars, the engine will shut down when it realizes it's getting too hot.

However, when I blew my gasket, it was because my radiator leaked out too much coolant, and the engine had no idea how hot it was getting. The coolant gauge was at C the whole time. Then the telltale white smoke and car no run no more.

On my girlfriends honda accord, she drove it for 6 months w/o an oil change, and had no oil left in the pan when we decided to take it on a trip on a hot day. The temp. gauge spiked, but the engine shut off and wouldn't let us start until it had cooled down. We limped it to a gas station and put in some oil, and it's been fine for ~5 years since then.
