I'm not sure, but I think I may have messed up my car. . . hopefully it's not a difficult fix, and someone knows what I did wrong. Here's what I did (keep in mind that as of this morning, my car was running beautifully:
I relocated the battery in the trunk, running 4ga wire from the original cable terminals in the engine compartment to a marine battery box in the trunk. I wanted to keep the orignal cables as is in case I need to change it back. After I did that, it seemed to run fine, although it seemed ever so slightly harder to start.
Then, I took off the MAF assembly (the big alluminum thing right before the air filter, right?) and painted it (just the outside, of course) with heat resistant annodized metal paint. I had to take it out of the car, so I unscrewed the sensor that was plugged into the top of it. I noticed that it only had 4 connection points, and that there seemed to be a place for a fifth. . . don't know if that's important. Anyway, I was careful about that, but when I reattached the assembly and the new cone air filter, the car won't stay running. It starts fine, but dies instantly. If I keep on the gas, it will stay, but the second I take my foot off the gas, it dies. Is the paint messing it up? What could be causing this?
Dude you have to be ultra careful with the MAF sensor. That thing is real sensitive and not cheap to replace. What you're describing sounds like the MAF sensor not operating properly. It's my guess that you're gonna need to replace it. Hopefully someone else on here has better news for ya.

OK, how do I check if it's grounded correctly? I assume I should unplug it and check the voltage on one of the pins, but I don't know what the trick is to unplugging it, which may have been part of my problem in the first place. The plug didn't want to come undone, so I unscrewed it at the base.
Anyway, here's an update.... This morning, I put the battery back under the hood, and it changed the symptoms a little. Now it doesn't die immediately, but it will not drive above 5 mph without surging, and there's no way I'm getting past 2nd gear. Sounds like the MAF, right? Or could it be that there is an air leak? I'll try putting back on the factory air filter, but I don't have high hopes.
One thing: There's a MAF sensor on Ebay supposedly from a 94, but it doesn't look like mine. Does anyone know if this is the right part? If I could avoid paying $250 at autozone, it would be great.
I know that I was very careful with the MAF, so I really don't want to believe that it is that sensitive... I just took the whole assembly off and looked at it, and I think that I may have figured it out.
The MAF adaptor plate that I got from Autozone said on the back that it would work for 91-94 sentras, so I wasn't worried about it, but I had to drill new holes in the gasket to line up with the holes on my MAF... still, I didn't worry. Now, When I look at it, the gasket has a square opening that completely blocks any air from getting to the sensor, which is on the top of the pipe. I'm going to try enlarging the gasket to let the air flow to the sensor, and I'll keep you all informed. I have my fingers crossed.
Yeah.... it's fixed now. The O ring was broken, but it wasn't the problem. I had to go through two MAF sensors before I found one that worked, but now it's running like new again (192k miles and it gets 40+ mpg on the highway) Those sensors are way too sensitive for my liking.
