Okay I have had a nasty nasty ROD knock for about a year now and its to the point where it just has to be replaced. I cant deal with it anymore and its going to go out sooner or later. What is a good price to pay for a used motor with say 70,000 miles on it? And where should I look? Oh and I did search a few pages deep.... HARRIS lol
Well, what exactly do you mean by rod knock? Are you referring to a crankshaft bearing problem? I've been experiencing a knock for a while and it's going to the shop ASAP. If your crankshaft isn't damaged, then it probably would be under $100 for parts. I suspect my crankshaft bearings are out, but hopefully the crankshaft is fine. I just thought I'd ask about your problem, since new bearings would cost much less than the used engine.
If its been knocking for a year then you already need a New motor... And while bearings may be kinda cheap..... The Labor DEFINITLEY wont be. Ill do some calculatios and give you an estimate of what itll cost to have them installed,,,,
Edit... I figured this for a 96 200sx... AC and PS... Rod and Main bearing R&R call for 10hrs... Plus Parts and extras.. My shop charges $56 an hour (cheap!)... So depending on the rate of your shop you could be looking at $600- $900 just to install the bearings. Wheras an Engine swap only call for 8.5 hours...

yeah i just need the block im putting it in myself. A friend of mine has a cherry picker and everything. He has an sr20det and has taken it apart to fix and now build it from scratch. So I figured this would be a good time for me to learn alot about swapping it in and what not. I am just curious about where I should go to look for a motor only...Thanks for the help

well, the SR20DET can be had from soko.com , jgycustom.com , a few places. the DET would cost u ~$1300-$1700. if you wanted just an SR20de engine, car-part.com ...you can get the engine cheap (not much more than you'd pay for just the block) between $200-$500 depending on the yard
Try using a search enging online like lycos or yahoo and search for places that sell jdm motors. There usually pretty cheap have don't have a lot of miles on em.
I have a monkey that continues the post whoring through out the night. His next stop is Pete's house where i taught him how to judo chop cracka ass thugs

I agree that alot of damage has already occured. I would also add that if you did need to have the work done on the engine that you already have do not let a mechanic\garage do the work. While they surely know what they are doing most are really not equipped to rebuild an engine from start to finish. If you were going to replace only the bearing then okay....maybe. The best way to go about that would be to have the crank measured (most garages don't even have the right gauges). More than likely it will need to be ground using a special machine. Any ways I guess the point is that if you decide to keep your same engine have your friend help you rip it out of your car and bring it to a reputable machine shop. It might be cheaper than a replacement engine, and will have a fresh set of everything on it. Just my 2 cents
Nu, I seem to be having a similar problem. I have some kind of knock in my engine too at around 4000-5000 rpm. It has gotten progressively worse over the course of 6 months. However, the odd thing I notice is that I don't hear it until I hit those higher rpm's. After 5000 the sound goes away but comes back when I get back in that area. When revving down the sound gets notoriously louder.
I'm assuming that it's a piston knocking as well, and since I've been informed that the GA is a full contact engine, the valves could now be warped, and piston head dented severely. My question to the forum is: "What to do, replace the damaged parts or find a new engine?"
Well, the cheapest I have seen em for is $99 at a local place in the Tampa area called Copher's U pull it (or whatever they are calling it this week). It's a cheap u pull it yard wheree they charge by the type of part, not by what it came out of. There are 4 of em in this area, maybe there is something like that by you.
