My well used and abused primer grey 1995 Sentra GXE GA16DE / auto has recently experienced a decrease in fuel economy. I used to get 26 mpg from it a few months ago, but recently it has gone down to 20-22 mpg. I have not altered where or how I drive it (delivering pizza for the same store), and the check engine light is not on. It runs fine and has no driveability problems. It now has 99,000 miles on it (Up from 68k when I put it on the road in august of last year). Why is it getting so bad? How long do the catalytic convertors last in these cars? I just changed the air filter and the oil, so I know it's not something that obvious.I don't understand why it is now getting the same fuel economy as my Frontier with a KA24DE and 215,000 miles on it now. Anyone have any ideas?

Gas mileage is almost impossible to troubleshoot without actually having access to the car but here's one thing you can look for. If you've never changed your O2 sensor (one sticking out of the header) you might do so. 99k is above and beyond the service interval for it and swapping mine at around 65k I gained a couple more miles to the gallon not too mention significantly improved throttle response.

you may need to change out your O2 sensor. I changed mine out during the turbo process and it got much better mileage even after the turbo. also try to see if your alignment is off.
i replaced the fuel filter on my car not too long ago, and gained a nice little torque, as well as MUCH better fuel economy.. Check your sparkplugs, and rotor for extreme wear.
I was getting the same milage a year ago. took it in to get an alignment and it jumped to 36 city 46 hwy. at the time I thought, "well I'll be damned"
I'm about due in again...

do you notice any black soot on your tail pipe?
how much does the o2 sensor cost? because i have a 97 sentra with ~57k on it, and i'm getting about 24 mixed hw/city, and just changed the air filter and sparkplugs.
dunno if this is related, but i have to floor it to maintain speed on hills at highway speed.

Well, it all depends on the hill in question. Mine is not very powerful on hills or anywhere else and it downshifts on a moderate hill if I have the cruise control on. One other problem I am considering is the possibility of a bad catalytic convertor as the fuel economy has gradually declined. I have observed as much as 45 mpg on a trip to Daytona Beach a few months ago too, cruising between 65 and 90 mph the whole way.

My car was gulping gas when i had my timing advanced but 70% of the time my car is at WOT. lol. now my timing is retarded 2* noticed a nice gas differance. im going to look into that O2 sensor if any one else has done it let me know if its worth it. i was told by a mechnic that o2 sensors are never in the middle they are either good or bad and when people change them when they are good they are just wasting money. a lil while ago my car threw the rear O2 sensor code took it out and cleaned all the black suit off it and put it back in reset ECU and checked the codes no more O2 sensor problem. Isn't the black suit coming off the exhaust normal? i mean i have a new cat only a few months old. and i have the 2" piping. when i just had a muffler i had it too. and its not oil its just that like black suit and the exsaust smells good its smells like its burning right. Dose not smell like gas and dose not smell like burnt oil.
thanks

My mileage dropped of on my '90 Sentra awhile back. It was getting 33mpg mixed and dropped to 30mpg and then to 26 or so. I had a new Air-flow meter, new plugs, new O2, etc. so it wasn't any of those. As a last resort, I cut my catalytic convertor off, installed a straight pipe, and instantly gained my mileage back.
I have a new one along with a new resonator and muffler to go on, so no tree-hugger comments

has anyone tried to clean their oxygen sensor? If so, how did you clean it?

Ha, you guys forget that we're in the middle of a fabricated gas crunch. I just saw a report about how there's a lot of sulphur that's being added to our gas. Sulphur evidently BLOWS your gauges ability to give a proper reading. I also wouldn't be surprised if it somehow caused our engines to burn the gas much MUCH quicker.
I wouldn't freak about blown mileage. My '99 SE-L's gettin' just over 200 miles on under a full tank (because I refuse to put more than $20 in my tank at any one time).
Look at how many people are having mileage issues. Can't be a coincidence. We just have to wait for the greed waves to pass...

The EPA is supposed to stop too much sulfur from being in gasoline. The sulfur gases emitted from buring fuel is very bad. But sulfur in gasoline cause poor combustion. So if more sulfur is being left in gasoline then the environment is suffering along with MPG's.

LOL. This sounds like something our wonderful government would do
I have a monkey that continues the post whoring through out the night. His next stop is Pete's house where i taught him how to judo chop cracka ass thugs
i was getting really bad mileage too, less than 20 actually. i replaced my o2 sensor and i gained a lot. before, i would shoot for 50 miles every 1/4 tank. now i just blow that figure out of the water and am hitting lik 180-200mil with a 1/4 tank left. i cant remember exactly how much the sensor costs but i do remember a $20 took care of it. i have an o2 sensor replacement thread on here somewhere if you want to read it. and if you do decide to replace it, RENT THE O2 SENSOR SOCKET KIT!!!! it is definatly worth it, and you get your money back anyway
