Question Temperature gauge reading high...

Hows it going? New to Sentras, long time Honda fan, Toyota mechanic. Strange combo eh? Anyways, picked up this 94 Sentra XE sedan for $150... Had a rod through the side of the block. I got a "new" engine from a yard with 80k on it and dropped it in. At the time, I didn't know any better, so I just dropped it in and all was fine. So it seemed. There was one extra plug off the back of the thermostat housing that I didn't have on my old block. Later found out that this was for US AT engines only. Figured no biggy, don't need it. May not, who knows. Anyways. Driving the car, it gets hot when idling for long periods of time. I was able to bring the temp down when running the heater and also it would drop to a normal area when the car was moving. Easy to fix I thought, its the radiator fan not coming on. Found the fan motor for the radiator was dead so I swapped the condensor motor with the fan motor and verified it came on by hard wiring it. Still had issues. Changed the thermostat and found the old one was stuck, that didn't fix it either. Changed the temp sending unit for the gauge, that did nothing. Now, I have seen the radiator fan come on before when the car was idling, but its not coming on like it should. That car reads WELL above normal and still no fan. I hardwired the fan up and idled the car and it lasted a lot longer then it did without the fan, but still got a little above halfway after idling for say 10 mins. I removed the thermostat completely and the problem was unchanged, so I have ruled that out. I have also verified I have good flow through the radiator and the cooling passages of the block.

My question is what does the thermoswitch on the back of the t-stat housing control? I read that it should be either there or on the lower section of the intake mani. If thats the case then I would think I would have an extra plug left over from my old engine as I used the same harness. This is not the case. I have NO extra plugs left and I am not getting any kind of check engine lights that would lead me to believe something is plugged in wrong. Unfortunatley I don't have very good resources for this car, so I am kind of stuck in the dark. This Chilton manual blows too. Any help would be greatly appreciated so I can get this car on the road. Thanks.

Hey I'm having the same problem... I swapped in a JDM engine and everything ran fine for about a day or so then I noticed the temp gauge jump to HOT!!! The car never overheated but I thought oh maybe the t-stat is just stuck. I changed out the thermostat, water pump and radiator no change... but the car in running completely normal not throwing out any codes or check engine. Completely stumped... I have a new temp sending sensor I'm gonna put in this weekend. Let me know you figure out what it is... Good luck!!

93 Sentra E JDM 1.6L/JDM tranny, Stromung cat-back, energy suspension motor mounts, active tuning RSTB... what's next?

I have some more info, maybe it will help, maybe not. The fan is working as it should, I got that problem solved. Car still reads high on the gauge, but a resistance check of the sending unit says the temp is around 150 or so. The sending unit is brand new and I even replaced the gauge with no luck. When I first fire up the car, its already sitting like 1/4 of the way up. I found the thermoswitch on the back of the thermostat housing is for US AT cars only. The AT cars use a 3 speed fan setup, where as the manual cars use a two speed fan setup. That confirms that this sensor is not my problem, but then why is the gauge reading off so much? Air trapped in the system? Any ideas? According to the sending unit, the car is at the correct temperature and not overheating as the gauge would indicate.
