I have a 1998 200sx SE my clutch recently went out one of the dampeners on the cluch plate had broken out. I went and got a new clutch kit and a new fly wheel. Put it in and the clutch chatters in reverse only. I have put other clutches in other cars before and I have never had this happen. So I tore it all apart again (After only 3 days was worried if I waited too long I wouldn't be able to get warranty coverage) and returned the clutch kit and got a new one from another manufacture, attempted to turn the fly wheel found that the new fly wheel was not turnable so returned it and got one that is correct (Big screw up on checkers part there). During the teardown to get the new parts out for replacement I verified that no grease was on the flywheel, clutch plate, and pressure plate. Clutch plate was installed correctly, and alignment tool was used. Got all the new parts again put it all back together twice as careful this time since I don't want to have to do this again. But hey someone hates me cause it still chatters only in reverse. I let the clutch out you hear like a popping noise and it is still there even though I have completely let my foot off the clutch, my foot is on the floor board. I already have to push the clutch to the floor to engage and it engages almost immediatly. I have to get a new clutch cable to fix this since the cable is at it furthest adjustment and I can barely disengage the clutch. So maybe a new clutch cable correctly adjusted may help but I don't think so since it is still doing it when I have my foot off the pedal. I tried adjusting the pedal according to the hanes manual and it makes no sense when i follow the intructions it leaves the pedal almost to the floor with no play (first clutch, for some reason the first clutch did not have the same problem of being adjusted all the way on the cable so I was able to do the adjustment on this one and still chatters or popping noise).
Let me apologize if this seems a little confusing and incoherent, I am writing this after a long day at work and school and I am really pissed off right now. The car has kicked my butt I have no idea what it is. Thanks for making to the end of this really long post and hope you may some ideas.
Ok trying to understand you... (i'm in class at 10pm too)
I think I'd try to get the new clutch cable on there first and see if you can't adjust it back to a place where the clutch engages all the way... see if that fixes the problem.
Ok I got the new cable in and it is now possible to shift the car into gear much easier. But the car is still making a popping noise in reverse only. Happens even though the clutch is completely let out and only when i am giving it gas. It does not do it if the cluch is all the way out but it is already moving in reverse, but if I touch the gas to keep it going then the popping noise comes back. Thanks again.

Camoy,
Did you solve your problem ? I do not have any idea what this is. Is it possible it was there before you changed the clutch?

I know this thread is old but if anyone else has this problem.....check the front motor mount first. This exact same problem happened to me after I installed my new clutch and cable(p.s. Use only the oem cable..it is way better than the aftermarket for adjustment and quality) The problem with my front motor mount was with the upper bolt on the dogbone mount. There is a plate with a nut that the bolt screws into. The plate MUST face toward the front of the vehicle and not down toward the bottom bolt. If it faces down, it will bang into the bottom bolt any time you give it some gas in Reverse. Actually sounds like the tranny is clunking around in the engine bay.
