chain tensioner install?

is it very difficult? I really want to try it and see if it fixed the coke can sounding rattling noise my car is making... I'm not the most car literate person, nor do I have many tools. Funds are very low right now, and this is the only option

please help! Guides, advice, anything I need to know... thanks

Upper or Lower?

Upper is cake, Lower is more involved.

I would think the lower one would be easier to install. The upper one you have to remove the valve cover and cam sproket cover. And I was never able to get that cover off w/o removing the motor mount.
For the lower all you would have to do is remove it, replace the gasket and put the new one in. Unless of course you need to remove the thermostat housing to remove the tensioner. In my experience removing the thermostat housing is a major PITA.

AFAIK you HAVE to remove the T Stat assembly not just the housing. WHihc means draining coolant whic I absolutely despise! Have I mentiond that I hate coolant.... I got a facefull today working on the car. GRRRR

I'm in the same boat. I've made 2 attempts so far at getting my cams in and still having trouble with the exhaust cam sprocket bolt. When you do it Katana200sx, make sure you're prepared. I'm to the point of using 2 open ended wrenches with pipes over the end of them for leverage. I'd use my breaker bar but can fit a bit onto the bolt(no room). But back to the main subject. I'm pretty sure my prob is the top one. Not sure exactly what I'm looking for though. Where is it at exactly and what does it look like? Anyone got any pics to help?

Remove the pass side motor mount and th etiming chaing cover. Then you have room to work to slack the tensioner and put a socket on the end of the bolt. Takes about 20 more mins. to take it off but makes it easier overall.

oh duh. Now I feel like a :dumbass: . Never thought of that. That will make it too easy or atleast should. I'm gonna give it one last try on saturday and hopefully no real issues this time. Hopefully I can figure out if tensioners need relpaced too.

Here's a tip on re-installation. You will have already installed the VTC and sprocket and torqued them on the intake cam. Install the intake cam and algin the mark you made on the chain with the mark on the sprocket. Lay the intake cam in place and put the intake cam sprocket on the marks. Bolt the intake cam sprocket to the intake cam, you will notice that you can get the dowel pin aligned but that it does not seat properly. THIS IS OK, just finger tighten the bolt for now. Install the cam caps based on the JWT instruction using the FSM tightening sequence. Once those have been torqued you are now prepared to tighten the intake cam sprocket bolt. You will notice that the lobes on the exhaust cam point away from the motor (cylinder 1 only) and the exhaust cam lobes are slightly higher than those of the exhaust cam. Put a wrench on the cam hex and slightly rotate the exhaust cam clockwise, you will see that the cam sprocket now slips into place and can be tightened.

This will save you the hedache of wrestling with the cam sprocket trying to get it to seat properly. I reinstalled my cams in about 20 mintues this time around, oh and this wil all make sense when you have everything apart.
