I was wondering if anyone has ever had any problems when they lightened there stock flywheel....I am only going to go like 10 lbs but am curious to what might go wrong when having a machine shop take off weight....
Why in the world do you think you can get a stock flywheel down to 10 lbs safely, and what reputable machine shop would do such a dumbass thing?
Shaving that much of the flywheel off will weaken the overall integrity of the metal and KABOOM! Crash! Boom! Bam! Say good by to your clutch, flywheel, pressure plate and possibly even your tranny and casing.
There is no way you can lighten a stock flywheel that much safely. Ya ever see what happens when one explode's?

There is a reason why there are light flywheels made by aftermarket companies. Do it right the first time or regret your mistake to eternity.

Isn't Wes running an oem lightened flywheel down to 11lbs with his 250 whp 200sx? I can't check anymore cause his website at www.wes.nissanpower.com is down, but I'm pretty sure thats what it said before.

I was going to bring this up if someone hadn't already. The last time I read Wes' page yes he was running a lightened stock flywheel. However he may have changed it but have never seen it stated on his page. Having said that I'm sure it's one of those exceptions to the rule. Wes must have gotten a good flywheel. The inconsitency of the metal is what started the initial scare. I read once you could take a box of our flywheels and try to bend each one in half. Some would bend easily and some not at all. Problem is, how do you know which one you have on your car. You could probably do 4-5 lbs. safely but to go to the weight you want it would probably break before they finished shaving it. However, I have no personal experience with flywheels beyond what I have read.
Regardless of everything I said in the previous reply: the flywheel is not a place to be messing around. Wether you go aftermarket or modified stock, make sure you are confident in what you're doing and be ready to take responsibility for what happens. If that thing explodes you could be dodging shrapnel thrown at 7000 rpm.......at YOU.
I have had mine at 11 lbs. for over 3 years without issue. It was lightened by a world class rally shop that removed what they could without taking off too much material. It has held time and again although it is starting to wear so I will eventually replace it with an aftermarket one. I did this when the only GA flywheel was the $400+ UR piece.
i had mine taken down to 12lbs. i have had it done for a year now and haven't had any problems. i have even dropped the tranny twice, once due to a broken shift fork and another time because of a broken differential, and it still looks fine. not bad considering it only cost me $60 to lighten it.
