Ok, well here's the situation. I'm due for a smog check and when I go, I pass all the tests but one. I do have a modified exhaust, but it's pretty much what a lot of the members here have (4-2-1 header to cat to 2in piping to muffler). For some reason the EGR is reading too high. Please someone help me figure this thing out (did I mention I live in California). Need to be done really soon. Has anyone else had problems with passing smog with this highly recommended setup?

In that case, you need to clean the EGR system, as dirt collecting in it over time makes it inefficient.
OR,
Take your ignition timing down to like maybe 5* BTDC. That should help lower your NOx numbers. Hopefully your HC and CO emmissions won't go up dramatically because of that.
I think I'm right. Man, I hate emmissions check. I know Cali is just nuts when it comes to that. Good thing I'm in Ohio, where its not as nutsy as your state.

living in PA is nice because we have limits 130 ppm. If you are under 5,000 miles you are exempt from emissions testing. But, take off the EGR and clean it out with Carb cleaner and clean the pipe, make sure the vacume lines are good also, replace them if its bad. Make sure your ignition system is good also, plus you may have a leaky injector that is dumping fuel, you never know. I would run the engine on the Nissan Consult first to determine any sensor faults and that will tell you if you are running rich or not. If will tell you EGR settings also and red flag you voltage readings from that.

Make sure all the vacum tubes that run the egr are working and not torn, specifically the one right under the egr that connects it to the BPT. I'm betting good money you'll find a hose leaking.
