Question Re-doing exhaust!!! but???

WoW i am finally redoing my exhaust system i had planed on doing this along time ago! well anyways i have chosen to do most of the work myself. instead of buying a cat back system, mainly cause its cheaper . I plan on buying a header from SSauto crome on ebay ($99) . and a catco catalitic converter($50). i am currently taking care of the actual 2 inch piping ($60), mandrel bent of course which i must say isnt easy to have custom made here in OK seeing as theres only 2 benders in the state! but anyhow the real question(s) I cant seem to choose what muffler/ resonator combination i want. so any feedback from ppl with aftermarket non catback systems would be apreaciated. (recomendations likes dislikes etc..)

I know there is already alot of info on exhaust on the forum but not much on particular mufflers and resinators.
sorry for the long post!!!
Thanks Chris.

go to your local autoparts supplier, and pick up a cherry bomb resonator.. as long as possible, with 2" in, and 2" out... then a straight through prefferated core muffler, will do you good... but.. on an NA application, its very un-likely to see gains from a exhaust, with no other mods..

I disagree. I put a custom bend 2" exhaust with SS Magnaflow muffler and I must say it made a difference especially on the highway. I added a header since, then it got even better. Stock exhaust is very restrictive.

(with SS Magnaflow muffler and )
where did u get the muffler and how much??? does it sound good? do you have an aftermarket resonator on it?

Dont even try to convince me that just putting an exhaust system on a factory car with no mods wont make hp, sure it wont make as much, as with mods but thats a given. And if youve searched the prodject 200sx pages they made 21 hp with just a cold air intake advanced timing and an exhaust system.

I am from Canada so it would not matter where I got em. I paid $290 CDN plus taxes for the muffler. I dont have a resonator but its not very loud. It sounded more like a Honda with a resonator (yeah it sounds ricey but I dont care, hehehe).

Personally, I would go with a Carsound catalytic converter, made by Magnaflow. I've read the quality is slightly better than Catco. Price wise it's about the same, $50 and less on eBay.

My preference on the rest of the cat-back would include a SS Magnapack resonator 2" in/out, 24" body length P/N: 14503 and a SS Magnaflow universal 2" in/out centered 5" x 8" oval body muffler P/N: 14214. This is the setup I will be going with in the near future. The best price I've had quoted so far on that muffler, within Canada, is $103 CAN/$79 US excluding taxes and shipping.

I'm not interested in any fancy or wide-mouth tips to draw attention to a less than impressive looking car so maintaining the stock look with the 2" outlet universal muffler is exactly what I want. The reason for choosing, well all, Magnaflow components partially has to do with their lower cost compared to other leading brands. The other aspect is that Magnaflow mufflers and resonators generally seem to provide the best sound/tone quality based on a high percentage of NF Member recommendations and carreview.com's ratings.

It's always best to search Google for products you're in the market for, such as Mandrel bent pipes, eg. combination J and U one piece units, or mufflers, to find the best prices from online dealers. Only until I do that do I compare prices I find on eBay.

i agree, $99 for a header seems too good to be true. it's probably gonna cost you more in the long run then if you saved up and bought a quality header.

the cat and exhaust setup should be good. for a muffler, i would definatly NOT recommend anything other then stainless steel and stick to the name brands. you don't wanna buy something for $150 just to have it crap out on you a year or two down the road.

ok i went to an autoparts store today and asked about the cherry bomb resinator and the guy there said you mean glasspack, so i said whats the difference and he said that a glass pack actually makes it louder and a resonator makes it quieter? True??? Im confused. i allso went to a speed shop near me and they wanted 100 bucks for a 2.5 universal fit resonator YEAH RIGHT!! i laughed in his face.

as for the cheap header, ive read the storries there copy cats ya i know, for those of you who dont know they coppied hotshots header and are selling it on ebay for a quorter of the price. if you have any other reasons for not buying it plz by all means tell me. but other than that its cheap and well this exhaust is on a very tight budjet as is. so sorry no hs headder for me.

actually you are wrong, they dont copy hotshot, they are a 4-1 piece which is a bitch to install pending if you egr tube fits properly, you dont really gain anthing but sound form the obx header.. it really sucks..i have had the ss auto chrome header and 6 months later, i had to get the hs header, kept blowing gaskets and it never fit so i had to make my own egr tube.. do yourself a favor, save money, buy hs header, and magna flow muffler are very good and sound really nice

i dont agree with you guys...i bought a rear section exhaust from SSAUTOCHROME on ebay and paid 79.00 shipped to my door. Its a knock off a stillen muffler exactly but full stainless. It sounds awesome, not buzzy but deep. Its not loud when youre crusing and it has a nice mellow tone similar to magnaflow when accelerating. The piping to the rear section is 2". I really like my new exhaust and im planning on getting the rest of my pipe done in 2". Is anybody running the SSAUTOCHROME $100 header?

I have a the header as well to be honest i think i got some sort of a gain accroding to my butt dyno. then agian i did my full exaust at the same time 2" piping new cat and a resonator as well as a new muffler i noticed a differance but i know if i bolt up the HOT SHOT i would get more of a gain although i have no leeks the openings on the flange are smaller then the actual tube is. and then at the end when it bolts up to the piping its all contsticted to the stock pipeing. and the EGR thing is not a big problem at all. all you do is cut off the egr tube bung on the "obx" header and cut off the bung off your old header ( exsaust manifold ) and then weld the old on the new one. it litterally took the shop like 8 minutes not a big deal at all
