Exhaust manifold leak.. god damnit.

Well ill sum up the story

went from factory to OBX headers

had obx headers for.. ehh... a few months, sold them, and got a stock manifold

installed the stock manifold, and ran it with egr and everything..

ok.. straight to the point

i had an exhaust leak coming from my exhaust manifold, where it bolts onto the head.. i took it off, and hte gasket was thick with black soot, and it looked like trash, i replaced it, bolted the bolts as freaking tight as i could, without stripping the exhaust studs, crank my car, and i dont hear it anymore.. but when i put my hand right above the exhaust port, i can feel exhaust coming out the top of the manifold... i swear to god, this manifold better be warped, or i will be PISSED.

(Im going turbo.. so if the head is warped, ill be pissed) otherwise, i have to replace just the manifold...

anywho, I suppose this is a venting thread.. lol.. well actually, does anyone have a picture of the gasket used for there manifold.. i got the ones from autozone. and they appear quite iffy to me.. i need to see what the factor nissan gasket looks like.

The Nissan exahaust manifold gasket is actually 2 different gaskets, one for each side of the manifold. If your in town Nissan dealer is too expensive, order them from Mossy or Courtesy, their prices are fairly good and you get a nissanforums discount. Shipping on Courtesy might kill the deal though, I think their minimum shipping is $8.

did you torque the nuts down in sequence according to FSM? it's like torque-ing down your wheel. doing it X-pattern makes a difference on how it seats

ok.. heres the pics

in the 2nd picture you can see where the exhaust has been eating away at the gasket.. thats cause the gay stock manifold design. but as you can see.. there is a big oval.. well the gasket doesnt seal the full ovel (solid black area, where the stock manifold opens)just a tiny notch, and its on the top and bottom.. but, for refferance, does anyone here know if this looks like a nissan OEM seal?

i don't quite remember the exhaust manifold, but recently when i REMOVE valve cover, start from outside and work towards inside. as for INSTALL, start from inside and work towards outside. opposite from what you're doing.

damn i just saw your pics. i totally forgot GAs have a different gasket.

i know we're talking about exhaust manifolds.

i confirmed it. inside out is the way to do it. not sure if it'll solve the problem. good luck though.

Is your manifold the california one, the one where the exhaust from 1&2 and 3&4 go into one port? If so there are different gaskets for that mainfold that don't have the piece in the middle.

hey chuck,

i had the same problem but when i had my POS obx but essentially if you tighten a gasket until your face turns blue, then you are causing the gasket damage, you only want to torque it to 20 ft lbs others you can cause cracks... my problem was that i had the caliversion like mike youngs and the obx are not made for the cali verson.. but my point.. hope to god that your heads aren't worped.. but most likely a faulty gasket.. get the ones from the nisssan stealership.. good luck, just IM me if you need more info. thanx for the side skirts
