I just saw a timing gun at my local autoparts store for 15 bucks on sale and decided to buy it, and now I'm ready and eager to advance the timing on my car. I know you have to have premium gas to do it, so I went to the gas station and my fuel gauge said I had about a quarter of a tank left of regular gas, and I only had 10 bucks on me left so I used that to get about...5.7 gallons of premium gas. I'm really eager to advance my timing but I don't really know if I should...Now my questions, What does knocking sound like exactly? Is my engine being damaged if I even hear it knock once and turn it the engine off? Should I put off this upgrade that I really want to do until I can fill up my tank again with a more premium gas? Or should I just try it anyways, and if I hear it knock turn it off and quickly return my timing back to stock? How quickly can detonation happen? I'm sorry about all these questions, I'm obviously a newb and can't help it =\ Thank you very much for you're time though.
advancing the timing is kinda scarey to do if you've never done anything like this before but it's really simple. i would wait untill you've ran all that 87 octane piss water out of your tank before you do the timing. if you advance it too far your engine will ping/knock, and you'll know it's knocking cuz it won't sound like an engine should sound. just set your timing to 15 and call it good.
if you need any help, lemmie know. i live just north of oregon city. or... if you're not busy tomorrow come out to the meet: http://northwestnissans.com/board/sh...0&pagenumber=1
bring your timing gun and some tools, there'll be LOTS of people that would gladly help you since it takes about 5 minutes.
ya, timing is really easy to do. the hardest thing to do while youre attempting to set the timing, is getting the car into timing mode which isnt even hard to do really.
Ah well thanks for inviting me, don't know if I can make it or not. I'm sort of ashamed of my car, for being as slow as it is, and for having all the scratches and crap all over it from parking in a stupid high school parking lot with all the crappy high school kid drivers (I'm not saying I'm any better, but I have yet to cause any damage to anyone elses property other than my own, which has only happened once on my old Civic...). Not only are they huge scratches, but they hit me and ran, so I pretty much get zip to fix all the damage done (about $2000-3000 worth of damage). By the way, how do you know when you're in timing mode anyways? Is there a light or something that'll flash and tell you? Oh and if you happen to know a cheap way to fix major scratches with dents to the driver side and a cheap place to find a rear bumper for a 98 200sx, that'd be great too =P. Thanks.
Personally for the bumper I'd look to the junk yards, unless u have an intention to put a body kit on it soon, doesnt really sound like it considering it seems u'd rather fix you paint first (i agree, im tryin to get mine painted by Christmas) and for the scratches id say, if they're not to deep maybe some kind of rubbing compound, other than that id say a respray (not a cheap alternative) Anyways good luck.
to me pinging sounds like you just poored a whole bunch of bb pellets into the engine... can hardly hear it if you have the window open or music up loud...
is it more like a continous ping'ing sound??... i dont have a RPM so how do u think i would be able to correct my timing or adv.?
all you need is a hand tachometer and a timing light, if you don't want to buy them you can always get one off of part loan from a local advanced auto parts or other similar place
