help on start problem nissan 96 sentra

Hi,

I had problem starting my car this morning. After I turned on the engine, the engine would crank, but the sound was less noisy than it used to be when the car could normally start, and the car would not start. The engine check light, the fuel light, and the battery light came out afterwards. I tried a few times, no go. Finally, I decided to keep turning the key after seeing those warning lights, all the sudden, the engine was started. I turned it off, and tried to turn it on again, the car could be started succesfully.

As I have zero knowledge of car mechanics, could anyone here educate me a bit what's wrong with my car? should I go to have the car checked at the garage? The mileage of the car is 48700. Thanks a lot!

so when the car is started, do the CEL, battery, and fuel lights stay on? sounds to me like it might be a fuel related issue, the sentra/ga16de is well known for having faulty starters as well, but that wouldnt cause a CEL to come on, neither a battery light or any light for that matter, check your battery tho. see what kind of voltage its getting. Have u replaced the fuel filter on the car yet? it might be due. Check the fuel pressure as well.

thanks a lot for the response. when the car is started, those lights are off. i had an oil change about 10 days ago, so i guess the fuel filter should be ok. btw, are they any places offer free check on fuel pressure? i don't know how to check it by myself. thanks!

well, at 48000 miles, the fuel filter is gonna start acting up...a fuel filter is different than an oil filter. ok, u said the lights come off when the car starts, so at this point im guessing its your starter. As for any places that can check the fuel pressure for free, im not sure of any. At this point, the fuel pressure isnt really an issue anymore since u further explained the situation, look into the starter/battery/fuel filter.

again, thx a lot! and again, a newbie question, how to check the starter and fuel filter? :-) i will get the battery checked, and do you think it needs immediate attention to check starter/fuel filter? I just went out to try to start the car, no problem now. thanks!

should be the starter, the starter has its on's and off's. unfortunately, there is no way to test the starter at home, but next time the car doesnt want to start, get under the car, and tap the starter lightly with a hammer(wooden end) and it should crank over. Good luck.

So is your car fixed now? If so, what was the solution.

I would appreciate it if you could post how you fixed it, so that it can help me out. My car has the same symptons as yours.

thanks.

Yeah, any update?

We are still struggling too ... tried to start today after letting it sit in the sun, just barely wants to catch and turn over, but won't ... know I am killing the battery and starter motor!

Well, I don't know. After the car could be started (by turning the key), I haven't done any mechanical check, and I can start the car fine except the initial crank is kind of weak.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck!

it sounds like your battery might be low that or your starter is starting to give out.
