Angry oil light prob along with leakage

Hi...Here is the scenario. I am working with a 96 Sentra 1.6L all stock. There is 48K on the motor and it is original. My problem up until today was disappearing oil...I am most certain that is is not being burnt. Missing about a qt or so a week...Give or take al ittle. Ok...Today...I started the engine and about 2 min after the oil light went off...It decided to come back on...About 2 min after that...The valvetrain started making noises as if there was no oil in the engine....It would get progressively worse if I allowed the car to continue running. At this point I turned the motor off and checked the oil. Sure enough it was on the money. So..I started the car back up and sure enough the problem duplicated itself. Anyone have any ideas??

Thanks..Brian

One idea is that if you think you have a leak (i.e. headgasket, etc.) there's dye you can buy from the dealership that you can put in your oil, run the engine, and it'll stand out as to where the oil is coming from. My '92 NX 1600 has a problem with the oil pressure light coming on whenever I put the car in gear (say from a stoplight). I'm not sure what mine problem is either.

you have been owned... scott is the king of the mods..

ok anyways, now "sure enough it was on the money" do you mean it was full of oil? or it was empty?.. you gotta give us a little more to work with. is there any oil leaks? how is your tranny fluid? are you a 5spd or auto?.. go under your car and see where any oil may be... it might be as simple as a loose oil filter, or oil pressure sending unit, or it could be a front engine crank seal, though ive never heard of this going out this soon in a car, it could be the head gasket if you are burning smoke out of your exhaust. but if no signs of oil are under/near your engine.. and you have perfectly clean exhaust.. i have no clue where your oil has gone.

check your oil pressure sender, see if leaking there, would explain both problems, and easier to replace than gaskets if happens to be the problem
