A noise coming from the engine

I'm driving on the freeway after the car warms up I can some times hear this noise.

It sounds like a metal on metal gurgling noise. It almost sounds like normal but I've noticed when I'm in OD/4th (its an auto) the noise seems more detectable. If I'm on the gas then the noise can't be found.

On the freeway when I drive near the concrete divider I can hear it the most clearly. Still 4th gear produces the noise best.

I've just done the water pump so that’s out.

This definitely seems engine related. Maybe the cams need shims or the valves are leaking?

Any ideas?

1. Noticed any smoke?
2. Do you have a custom air filter? Is it louder with the air filter off?
3. Have you checked your ATF lately? Drain some and try to see if there's any stuff floating in it...

The trans fluid was just changed.
The pop charger has been on for years. Clean, no problems.
No smoke either.

I did notice when the engine bogs down under load the noise seems to happen more.

It's sporadic but most noticeable when I accelerate from idle in 3rd or 4th gear and the engine begins to bog down.

Gurgle gurgle gurgle, ------- gurgle ->repeat if low RPM, disappear with mid or high RPM's.

I wish I had a tach!

What if the car is idling lower than the stock setting?
Or maybe it's pissed off cuz I recently adjusted the TPS back to stock settings.

How can I get a temporary reading without a tach?

Sounds like your timing is off and you hear gas ping or you have a plugged convertor.

What does he mean, plugged converter? catalytic?

Timing is advanced 15 or 16 deg. I am using cheap gas lately. I'll boost it some and see what happens.

Don't start me on this again Yes, I put it back to stock settings. Maybe the ECU needs to adjust.

Yeah, I put 1/4 oz of boost in the gas and the problems seem to be gone.

That must have been it. My bad! I always do stupid stuff lie that and then forget I did it.

Thanks for the help.

meaning now that the gas booster is out it's okay now?

about the TPS, I was meaning to ask if you got the position correct, because there are a few degrees of adjust on it, oh well...

congratulations!!! you solved that without our useless advice!

Not quite! Your advice made me remember I've been running 87 octane not the 92 octane. Gas prices were sky high so i took a chance... then forgot that I did.

I added a little octan boost, very tiny, and so far so good.

The TPS is pretty easy to setup. Just get a volt meter and poke it into each specific wire hole. Then loosen top screw and adjust to proper idle voltage. You do this with the engine running. Not hard at all. The FSM tells you everything you need.
