Question 1997 pulley tensioner

i had to replace one of my serpentine belts, and have come across an interesting situation. the bolt used as a tensioner on the power steering pulley is missing. i was able to just move the pulley loose by hand. i thought that i was missing the bolt but then:

1) fsm has no accounting for this bolt......i have checked every diagram involving the power steering and drive belts, but no bolt anywhere....

2) friend's '95 sentra is also missin this same bolt. made me think it doesnt exist, but a mechanic told her that she's missing a bolt on her p.s. pulley (sadly, she's car illiterate, and cant remember his specifics).

the pulley has a braket attached to it, with a hole on a surface perpendicular and behind the pulley, in which the bolt should go thru......

im sure this might be confusing unless one has become very comfortable with that region of the engine bay.....basically, im asking whether or not my "ghost" tension bolt exists...im sure it does, but i can't find it anywhere......

p.s. 1997 ga16de (200sx)

that sounds a bit familiar.....i think its a bolt that tightens and loosens, with another bolt bracket holding it in place....basically, i think its very similar to the tightener on the alternator belt.....

ill get pics up in a day or two, showing my exact situation.....

theres a nut you loosen, then a bolt you loosen for your p/s. it's not the same deal as the altenator which has an idler pulley. if the bolt you were talking about is the one i'm talking about then i would get it replaced asap.

Check ENGINE MAINTENANCE: Checking Drive Belts in the Maintenance section of the FSM, chapter two perhaps.
I have the '94 Sentra FSM and the bolt is shown but not in exploded engine diagrams for the GA in EF & EC Sections, only SR, which is odd. I replaced it two days ago as the one I had was rusted, bent and it cracked off taking it out. I tried several shops locally, even one that carries bolts and they didn't have it. So, $4.92 later from my Nissan dealer and I had a new shiny one, albeit about 1/4 shorter. The one you need is a 8mm x 75mm Adjusting bolt for the power steering, full threaded, which is why it's hard to get. I'm tempted to replace the one for the alternator as well assuming I can get it off.

Just to point out, the alternator doesn't have an idler pulley, that's for the A/C.

My Sentra was made in Mexico but judging by the FSM, which has no mention of Mexican built Sentra's, the GA has both bolts for adjusting the power steering pulley like you described bluepulse.

I can post a pic racerdx if need be to show you. Perhaps it uses a hydraulic tensioner instead?

racerdx,
I just took mine off and yes there are two bolts.
One is long (to adjust the tension)
One is short (this one bolts into the nut that the tension bolt screws into).
Hope this helps.

the front serpentine belt has a tensioner pulley, but the rear belt doesnt. its that mysterious bolt i was inquiring about.....pretty sure, for this application, that the mexican b14's aith a/c are the same as here, but not absolutly sure.....

The rear one has a bolt to lock/unlock the pulley in place the other one is to adjust the position. Unlock the short hard to get at one, then adjust the other one to the desired tension and then lock the other one back in place. It rides along a track pretty much(the hard to get at one). The front has an 8mm adjuster bolt that is just above the AC that goes to the tensioner pulley. Clockwise to add more tension.

the p/s belt is a bitch to loosen if its the first time the belts have been changed. for the a/c and alternator belt i just loosened the pulley. i still dont know the adjuster bolt ya'll are mentioning.

I was messing with my belts yesterday, and my SR has the locking bolt and long tensioner bolt on both the PS and the Alt. I'd just go to the $tealership and buy one.

yea, the bolt in reference is the same on the sr, well, enough in common to be the same....the short lock nut that holds the tensioning bolt in place, and the long (2-2 1/2"). ordered it today, and it only cost $5.36......has to be the cheapest part ive ever seen from a nissan dealer.....

car'll be back on the street again soon, thanks for your help guys (and girls if applicable here)....

I wish I'd read this thread before getting mine fixed... this last weekend I managed to eventually find the missing part (whole bracket for the sliding bolt had been left off after an engine swap) and bolt it all up.. now runs silently and no power steering screams jon tight corners
