Oil Pan Leak

When I first got my car (about 5 months ago with 120,000 miles) I noticed a slight leak coming from the oil pan so I replaced the gasket and washed the engine. I figured everything would be just fine but next time I looked down there was more oil coming from the oil pan. About half the bolts (mainly the ones on the passenger side, where most of the oil is coming from) were somewhat loose, so I re-tightened them. I have done this twice since then. Now at 135,000 miles the leak is getting worse. There is no oil leaking between the bell housing and the engine so I don't think it is the rear main seal. What else could it be?

Also, I bought a Hotshot CAI and the filter that came with it seem fairly low-quality. The sides look to be made of the typical high- flow materials the end end of it is no different than a screen door. There is no way this is keeping dirt out of my engine. The filter that came with it is "Hyper-flow" whatever that means. Does anyone know if this is a good filter?

I used to get smoked by metros and carollas so I put on the world's biggest NOS sticker and 4-deck spoiler. Now I can kill Ferarris

HS has NEVER used K & N filters. You can clean the filter they supply just like a K & N though. As fpr the oil leak the rear main seal and the crank seal are known to go.

Mine Hotshot didn't come with a K&N. The brand is Hyper-flow and it looks like crap and is not washable. I ordered the intake from importpartsplus and they said it would have a K&N.

I heard that typically, rear main seal leaks leak between bellhousing and engine, mine is not doing that. I hope that's not the leak because I just did a clutch job on the car before I noticed the leak I'd hate to have to take off the tranny again

This is your outer main seal. The one attached beneath your main pulley. I hear it’s a cheap part to get but the replacement can be a pain.

I need to replace mine too but the leak is not so bad and I'm lazy so for now it will wait.
Good luck

That sounds fun, do I need to remove my transmission?

No it is behind the crank pulley. Other side of the motor.

I thought the same thing when I first got the CAI. It seems to be working well so far, with no problems at all. Others also got the "Hyper-flow" with the same results. So I wouldn't worry.

i just replaced my oil sending unit...i thought it was my crankshaft seal again...but it wasnt..and the oil was surrounding my oilpan....and bolts....this was the problem that i was coming across..that sounds like yours...if you get a chance get under your car and check a little above the pan, see if you can trace the leak to there....its a little plastic peice.....

So the oil sending unit can cause leaks on the front back and passenger side of the oil pan? I'll look for it. It sound that it is most likely the crank pulley seal. If it is, how hard is that to replace?

On an unrelated subject, is it common for GA16DE's to leak oil into the intake through the blowby? My car does that now and so did my last car (95 sentra GXE). Is there anything that can be done about this? (not one of those breather caps, they just leak onto the ground) On my last car it even started choking off the idle and had to be cleaned out, some of the oil seemed to be coming from the EGR.

Search and you shall find.

If you were comfortable doing a clutch job than this should be a walk in the park.

Post Catch can

If you want to eliminate the crap that is recirced into the intake you can get a nice catch can. Greddy makes one that will eliminate all of that stuff.
