broken drive axle?

Yesterday I was driving my normal route, except when I downshifted for a turn, I heard something snap and power was not being delivered to the wheels. I could still engage gears, and the speedometer would move proportionate to the RPM/gear but the car itself would not move. I had it towed to a garage and the mechanic said I probably broke my drive axle. I called him today and it was indeed broken.

Just wondering if any of you have broken your drive axle, and how much was it to replace/repair it?

i've never broken one of the axles themselves. my cv boots tore and i replaced the axles. they were only like $100 each. so with labor it should only cost you about $150

i wish i could do it myself, but I don't have the mechanical inclination to do that, and plus I can't work on my car in the parking garage (im in college, live in a dorm)

anywho, its already done and im driving it back home this weekend to get rid of it and my parents are buying me a new car because this is not the first time its broken down on me in the middle of nowhere, and also ive spent probably about 6000$ in repairs on this car that i bought for 3500$. Most likely going to buy a wrx; tired of fwd, no power, weak parts.

Must be nice to have parents who will buy you a wrx. Might as well just get a touring 350Z. Maybe even a track, the same for a loaded 350z vs a loaded WRX. And WRX are AWD but i believe are 60/40 toward the front.

the weird thing is .
if u loook turn the tire as if ur turning RIGHT
and then goto the driver side and look bhind the tire. u see the CV boot. but look kinda. above that but the the rite more. and u see another thing looks just like it . it guess. its for turning. and stuff. but is it calld a tie rod?... it has a boot too. but mine tore/rippd and exposed the bearings and stuff in it.. and. does anyone know where to get a boot for that?.. i went every auto store. and they happen to say. "we can get it. but for domestics not imports." thats just rediculous. ...
