Is it possible to bypass the a/c compressor with a shorter belt? This is the second clutch I have had a problem with off the remanufactured compressor from O'Reilly Auto. O'Reilly wants around $153 for a new one. They have a 90 day warranty, but I can't find my receipt. How hard is it to change the clutch out?
I don't want to drive my car like this for fear of hurting the compressor itself, so until I can get the money for the new clutch, I'm going to have to run without a/c. As soon as I start up the car, the clutch starts grinding and smoking.

yes you can bypass it. just put a tape measure around the pulleys with the tensioner all the way loose and go to the auto store and find the one the closest to your measurement.
iwill sell you a genuine nissan compressor for a 1992 for 50.00+ shipping. it only has 30,000 on it when I pulled it out for racing the car. Looks like new and ready to ship, I have it packed already and boxed.
let me know

Ok. I tried to bypass the a/c today. Won't happen for two reasons.
1) I couldn't get tension on the belt, running straight from the crank pully to the alternator.
2) Even if I could get tension, there is a bolt right smack in the middle if the belt. It would be chewed up faster that you can say 233HP 200SX.
Seeing as I have to have my car this week so that I can go to interviews and turning in job applications (job= married sooner=mods sooner), my father shelled out the cash and I ordered *shudder* the a/c clutch from O'Reilly. God I hope this the last thing I am going to have to fix in my a/c system. i've already flushed the system, replaced the expansion valve, compressor. What's left? The accumulator and drier? (I hope I didn't just jinx myself....)
Any suggestions about the belt? This might be nice to know if I ever decide to completely gut the car in full race trim.
SunnySentra.... I'll let you know about the compressor. If the fried clutch ruined my compressor, I'll email you as soon as I know.

dunno..i've been thinking of selling my compressor and running a short belt, but i didnt know there was something in the way. i'll look at it next week when i replace my motor mounts
I think you can remove the braket that holds that idle pulley. That is what the bolt is for I think. If you remove that braket/pulley, you should be able to run that short belt. I just didn't want to mess with removing the bracket if I am only going to replace it later on. Less effort is good, and because of my time schedule, I didn't have much of a choice. I hope to do the repairs monday morning, that way on Tuesday the door pounding for a job begins on a new scale...
