What/where exactly are these marks? I've asked my mechanically inclined uncle for help with advancing my timing, and he just told me to do it "by ear". Is there a way to check your timing advancement w/o a timing light?

u cant advance your timing by ear, thats gotta be one of the dumbest things ive ever heard of(no disrespect to your uncle).....i'm sorry, but damn....u need a timing light so that marks show up, theres a way to advance the timing without a gun and that is advancing it, then running the car and checking for knocking/pinging but u wont get an exact number as to what degree the timing is at

actually you can. well with mine (i used a light btw) the idle rpm's went up as i advanced.
but to actually do it by ear......um, yeah, i wouldnt try it

Doing it by ear is smart IF you know what you are doing. That's how I do it and I just back off a hair to bring it back in from the brink of detonation under load. An old timer told me that as a kid and I thought he was crazy too, but it's actually the best way for maximum performance. Always remember though that if you are over enthusiastic with the advance you will ruin the engine.
Hey, I need help on my timing....
Forgot the damn timing marks on my Unorthodox 1.6L ga Pulley!
Anyone know how many total marks?
What each one is?
Whats the last one?
etc...
Cant read the damn things after the install.
Was on Factory timing and I advanced the distro..
No knocking or pinging with high load on a hill!
So sounds good but I can't time it exactly and I want to
advance a little farther.... Dantheman@indystart.com
Thanks Guys!

the marks on the UR pulley are the same as the factory pulley...........a lot of ppl think differently because its smaller. a total of 6 marks, the last one is 20.......read the top and work yourself downward. most of our cars come with an 8* timing from the factory, some as high as 10.
it's mostly an optical illusion, when i did the ur pulley, it's harder to actually see the marks line up with the pointer because of the smaller size, i had the same problem and might put the stock pulley back on just to see where i'm at, then install the ur pulley. from the last time i messed with it, i might be between 12 to 15 degrees. and that timing by ear, it mostly works on chevy v-8's done that and gained 20 to the wheels with cam swap, and oodles of torque.
