3.5 puts it exactly at the full mark. Manufacturers recommend a little less than full, hence 3 and 3/8's. I guess it's a CYA (cover your ass) thing for them, so we can't sue them because we put too much oil in the car when they told us not to even fill it to the full mark. I changed oil on a million cars when I worked at a shop back in the day and it's funny that just about every engine you can think of takes multiples of half quarts, like with some exceptions, just about every V8 took 4.5, and V6's took 4.0 even, and 4-bangers took 3.5. Deisels usually took 14 quarts. I had an old '78 Porche flat-6 come in that took 12 quarts of oil. Don't ask me why.
